Looks great! Do you by chance know where he got his seals? I'm guessing he didn't re-use the old ones unless they were in very good shape. Although your case looked in good shape to start with. Thanks for the pics!!

Well, I've been traveling a lot the last few weeks and that's slowed progress on the big stuff, but lots of little stuff is getting done before and after work. However, Don the upholstery man brought back the seat frames yesterday and that provided plenty to do today. The good news and bad news on the seats is the front seats already have ACI seat foam and the foam is in great shape. The bad news is that the seat backs were junk and upon looking for replacements I discovered they were actually 1970 seat backs. The frames were in pretty rough shape, but after about 5 hours of sandblasting me and MPD have them looking good. I have to be honest though, 5 hours of sandblasting outside with a mask, hood and coveralls in 90 degree weather took it's toll. I am beat.
Regardless, the frames look good now. I think instead of painting them I am going to get them powder coated. It's not so much about durability as it is laziness. I can't imagine how many cans of primer and paint it would take to get these things well coated, and the beauty of the powder coater having the powder cling to the metal out of a fog of dust via an electrostatic charge seems irresistible. Interesting info on the back seats. If you remember from my history on the car, back in the 1980's when the second owner had it, the car was burglarized and the seats were stolen out of it. When I bought it, it had cheezy late-1977 or so, front seat foam and covers. I installed the 1972 ACI seat foam and the correct year covers.

No, I think he means the rear seat. Because a front would be a low-back upper portion.
As a settlement of the theft claim, the second owner's insurance company presented him with a set of front and back seats from a wrecking yard, if I recall correctly. To them, all Firebird seats were the same. Though the fronts were later year frames, they were the same as the 71 and up style and accepted the new correct foam and 72 seat covers. I didn't do anything to the rear seat assembly as it already had 72 covers on (what I thought was) a correct 72 frame. UPDATE: I just reviewed my photo archive, and when I first viewed the car in British Columbia, the rear seat was out and he had a newly recovered (in 72 pattern) rear seat assembly among his parts stash in the garage. The front seats in the car were black dyed, originally red, 1977 style seats but he also had a set of correct-looking, 72 covered front seats that he put in the car instead of the 1977 seats, for shipping purposes. The 1977 front seats were crappy so I left them there, as the shipping company wouldn't take loose parts and you have to declare any parts and get taxed for them at the border. I was referring to the front seat back panels. I may be wrong, but I don't think these are correct. The GM part number comes up as 1970 Camaro.

those do not look like 1970 seat backs to me.

Yeah, I figured that out a few days ago. Not sure why when I did the parts number search it came up 1970? Also, they look a lot different than the repops at the bottom, in addition to the square invention.
If anyone has two nice spares please let me know as these are beat. Can just dashes redo seat backs and has anyone ever seen them if so? |

I see several seat backs on eBay right now if you look for 71 and 72 Camaro or Firebird seat backs and click the "used" button on the search.
