Here is the mail I sent BJ.
WOW!!!!! I sat at the TV all evening to see the 69 GTO ram air IV lot 444 and as has happened in the past every time you get a nice Pontiac up on the block you go to a commercial. Why is this? If it was a damn Camaro or Corvette you would skip the commercial till that Chevy left the block. Looks like I have wasted enough time watching your auctions. Being a Pontiac collector I know to avoid your Chevy lovers auctions when I'm looking for my next collector car. Here the the lame reply they sent back Hello, Thank you for your interest in Barrett-Jackson. For questions about the Speed broadcast, please contact them at www.speedtv.com as ultimately they control the broadcast. For additional questions or information, you may contact Barrett-Jackson at our website, www.barrett-jackson.com. JMO, I think this car would have done better at a different auction...Mecum or even Russo and Steele would have been a better venue to sell this car.
![]() It seems the "other" GM cars just don't do well at BJ...I thought the '68 427 'Vette that sold before the IV was a pretty good deal for the buyer. Mike |

Did you see the nice feature they did on it however, thought for sure that meant they would cover the actual sale, oh well. And, yes, man did it look nice!

Did he pay more than 70K for the car? Did he have to put more into the car to finish it?
The health issues have to be true, or he was overextended, and/or the market is truely softening..... You can claim time slot and all, but they have to allow people not present to bid don't they, and any primo Pontiac guy would want that car in their collection, so if B.J doesn't allow absentee bidding they(collector)would have had a rep there, I don't know anyone involved, but I would lean towards the health/ market softening theory. Somebody shine some light for me..DW

Barrett Jackson is a ripoff if you are selling a Pontiac collector
car. The only auction to go to if you want to sell a nice GTO is Mecum....... GTO's bring much better money there, and you are allowed to post a reserve on the car so you can't get hosed. I remember last year when a gorgeous numbers matching 65 GTO sold for less than the cost of it's paint job at Barrett Jackson. A man could make a killing going to Barrett Jackson, buying GTO's at fire sale prices then taking them to Mecum and unloading them. This could be the basis of a very successful business! They couldn't show the the GTO last night but they did find time to feature two Volkswagen "Things" going across the block! Somebody get a rope! Look at the world record prices the Randy Williams estate cars brought at Mecum. They wouldn't have brought squat at Barrett Jackson. As a matter of fact, the 61 Ventura out of the Randy Williams collection brought more than double the money of the Ram 4 GTO that sold at Barrett Jackson last night. In the real world, no 61 Ventura is worth double the price of a Ram 4 GTO. |

I have lost money on 95% of the GTO's I have owned but I still buy them because it is a hobby I really enjoy. While I feel bad for someone (including me) who takes a hit when selling a car I honestly believe it is better for the hobby if it's hard to make money with GTO's.
We are supposed to have/restore GTO's because we love them not because we are planning to retire on the windfall. If a GTO ends off costing me a net loss of 10K and I got to enjoy it for a few summers, so be it. We all spend money on less worthy purposes. My wifes minivan depreciates 25k over a 3 years. This is supposed to be a hobby not a career. In my perfect world GTO prices are such that when we restore a car wisely we lose money but not so much to be prohibative. That way GTO's will stay in the hands of the people who love them and sacrifice to restore them rather than a bunch of speculators, brokers, museums and BJ show offs who just want to own the flavour of the month. Just my two cents, no offense intended!

Not necessarily jumping in to defend B-J, but the message above seems ill-directed. It's Speed that should be getting the heat. B-J doesn't control the coverage and what makes it tv, Speed does. Then again, I've alway found Speed TV coverage to pretty much suck in general. There are better car programs on Discovery, Learning Channel, and BBC television. Should probably add, I don't really care one way or the other about the relative bidding (or lack thereof) on the GTOs.... I just want to see them covered as well as the other pieces at the auction. I'd really prefer they just run the auction straight with no commercials. |

This car will have abandonment issues its whole life!
The real question is why is everyone so concerned about this car? But, still nobody wants to give this orphan a good home? Kevin didn't even get it done before he let it go for a good price! It sold after a lot of people saw it for sale at a Nationals, and was bought by a guy who couldn't get it on ebay fast enough. Only to be bought by a guy who when it was finished sent it to auction soon after that. That poor car! |

My apologies if I offended the previous owners, and not taking in to account all the circumstances surrounding the sales of the car.
My point is this car has been flipped to 4 different owners in 6 months. I hope the next trailer ride is to a friendly garage, or a pure stock event. I wish it had a good home too! |

If this is a numbers matching car, and it's as nice as most of you have said, I'd be glad to give this car a permanent home for 70K. I was under the impression that it was going to change hands for alot more.
I don't even get the speed channel, but who cares if it was televised, at auction it brought 70K. It wasn't as if it were the home shopping network and everyone outside of the tent got shutout of the auction. If you are the proud new owner, and get in a bind in the next few months(which seems to happen with this car), give me a call, I won't be in a bind unless I loose the use of my hands...nevermind,heck I've got insurance for that, but someone else would have to run it down the strip at POCI.....DW

As I understand SuperStocks post, Greg bought it for the second time at the auction. (Greg is the buyer who bought it from Jegsteck and Kevin). The only problem now is that ton's of folks know what he has in it. 70k plus 10% plus transportation expenses and sales tax in his home state (unless he has a dealers license). I agree the car was worth a ton more than what it brought. Maybe Greg will keep it a while and enjoy it. If I had the money it would be in my garage!

does anyone think the color combo hurt the price on this car? I mean, yeah it's a ram air IV 4spd which is desirable all on its own, but I looked at it and thought, if it weren't red on red it probably would sell for a lot more. I really don't like the red on the dash.
