Hi all, I forgot about this thread. This was my 70 Lemans that I was selling and wanted to clone witch had not one GTO part on it when it was for sale. That member really pissed me off. I think this thread was very good in the long run, and thanks to everyone. Your car do what you want but do not represent it. Go Pontiac!

Everyone has an opinion on this. I can appreciate a well done clone to a point, but now it's so common place that I usually just walk by at a show. I'd rather see a Chevelle 300 ,Tempest, F-85, or a Special, than an SS, GTO, 442, or a GS. I think all the base models were converted or parted out for the high performance models and now they're just not around anymore, which is really too bad. Just what is the motivation to add a decals, spoilers, and other cosmetic features to a car and rebadge it? If you want to make a car fun to drive then upgrade the driveline.

It seems to me that a lot of the cloning started taking place when eBay, Arizona auctions, car flippers and "classics" dealers started driving the prices of the true SSs, GTOs, Road Runners, etc. up. Everyone wanted to cash in on the craze and swapping out hoods was a fast, easy and relatively cheap way to do it.
I saw a guy buy and sell three different '66 Chevelle SS clones in one day in the Spring Jefferson car corral ... every one to a dealer, every one for at least $2500 in profit.

Hey all, fun thread.
I have a 66 Tempest convertible, the fun thing about it is owning a Tempest means never having to prove it isnt a clone. On the other hand, we are cloning my wifes 72 convertible LeMans into a GTO. Not to sell or anything other than a wiley wink to those who "are in the know." As I mean to say, most of us here know from the git-go that there were no convertible GTOs made in 72. So in essence we are setting up a deception for fun, not for profit as we will likely never sell either of our cars. In the end, I think it is about deception in one form or another. Like the very worth while video that was linked here, the background knowledge makes it or breaks it. It either achieves the desired or intended result, or it is maliciously perpetrated. Then too, my hipocrasy varies by degrees. Would I clone a car into something it wasnt when it rolled out of the factory? Sure, but probably modify it into something 180 degrees from original is more likely. Would I date a post-op Transvestite that looked just as good as true born woman? Hell no. Obviously not a numbers matching human being.... We are fickle creatures indeed, eh? |

facn8me, that car oozes kewl as it sits.. I'd drive it without washing it.. Maybe match the rims...
 On the other hand the red LeMans is super clean and just as kewl.. LOVE the front end on that.. I appreciate the base models too.

"Judge" adds hype to the add referred to by the OP... Just a way to get more $$ for the car as emotion clouds judgement.
As for clones, to each his/her own. "Recreation", though is the retardedest word that could be used to describe a muscle car.

I see nothing wrong with cloning as long as the seller discloses. Problem comes down the road when Mr. Unethical Fastbuck gets his hands on it and tries to pass it off as the real thing. Too bad your titles or our registrations do not describe out cars correctly. ie My 68 Firebird 400 is just a plain Firebird in my province.

Why do you think all of those RamAir parts are reproduced?? What about GTO and Firebird 400 hoods...and on and on......It isn't because there are so many Ram Air cars out there that they need replacement parts...LOL......all those repop parts are for CLONING......creating a RA car....etc.

It is 10x the car quality wise and at the end of the day, a NOM WT driver condition Judge isn't any more special than a GTO that has been excellently "cloned" with Judge equipment and in perfect restored condition This is of course just my opinion and market value typically dictates otherwise.I think the general consensus is that cloning isn't a big deal as long as you aren't out to rip anyone off through misrepresentation. The only people that hate cloning or ask why anyone would do it are the ones who can actually afford the real thing

I found it a whole lot more challenging to find good Lemans-specific parts than GTO equivalents. The valence, grills, front running lamps, etc. are not re-popped. Luckily I was able to chase down NOS Lemans badges for the ones that are not being reproduced. Even parts like door latches- nobody lists them for a 69 Lemans and I discovered that mine were different than for a GTO. I found out by trial and error that 69 Chevelle latches fit perfectly though.
Strange as it may be... I think it is more difficult, and probably more expensive in the end to restore a LeMans than to clone a GTO. Well, except the chrome front bumper. There are tons of good 69 Lemans bumper cores around, can't imagine why that would be.
