camshaft end play question
Ok so i installed new cam with a cloyes timing chain and gears thanks to the recommendation's from the forum here. Cam is degreed and all looks good. BUT my camschaft end play is 2.5 -3.5 thousands. Is this too tight? i have searched here for the last 3 days looking for an answer. the only thing i worry about is i have read here .03-.07 is acceptable but the 2.5 is making me worried. This is a Hydraulic roller cam fwiw. Thanks as always Joe

If you need peace of mind, measure the thickness of your cam retaining plate and order a plate with a thickness that will get you closer to the spec you want to see.
That said, my roller cam is out of spec to the loose side by about 3 thou. It's been running like that since 2015 and I put about 5K miles a year on the car. I think you'll be fine.

Keep in mind that a steel cam expands more then a cast iron one would.

Something else you can or could have checked it the little hole and machined slot in the cam plate for oiling. Some of the after market ones didn't have it. I think mine was around .004 end play and it has been fine. As was mentioned, the cam-plate thickness sets the end play. I seem to remember the factory ones measure in at .124 and some of the after market ones were .115
