Major step back this week. Mounted the hood but had a hell of a time getting it to fit - it did not. Nothing went in - fenders too close, header wrong match, etc. finally said to hell with it, pulled off the hood, bumper, header and core support. When I had the frame stripped I figured since the doghouse was ok the frame was - wrong. As shown subsequent measurements show the passenger frame horn was bent outward 0.400", pulling the doghouse out of square. I also found I welded the patches for the core support in the wrong place. So some repairs are in order. The horn was kerfed, pulled in and welded - that solved the frame issue hopefully. The core support was repaired also. Another minor issue was the shift boot - d@mn thing disintegrated after five years - Chinese garbage rubber. I am replacing it with a leather boot made by Redline. Bumper will be straightened, noted the it was replated in 1987 - I wonder if that was when it got in the accident? |

It's always a little disappointing finding out about the 'history' of our cars in this manner. Discovered mine had a little front end fender bender during the resto...<sigh>.

I wonder if these fixes will help with the poor fitment issue you were having on the bumper recently.

Funny you mention that. I have a spare bumper with brackets. I disassembled it and compared it to the first - obviously bent!
I will need to bend it back to fit, the spare is driver quality only. I will be using the spare's bracketry though... |

More fitting the front end. First the bumper - using some
wood, a couple of milk crates and the lift I used the weight of the car to bend the bumper some. After this pic I flipped it over, put the wood on the center nose and bend again - close enough! A lot of futzing with the header panel - it sat too low, and close. So some shims between it and the core support did some good, and the center brace from the core support was modded to lift it too. I finally got about a 1/8" gap all around, except the passenger side - I do not see a way to rid that. Hood closes nice also. I tried to salvage the bumper bolts - an exercise in futility. Will have to wait till the new ones arrive mid-week. |

Nice! Curious how it fits now, looking forward to pics!
My header panel also wasn't a very good fit, and I could tell the body shop worked it some. Unfortunately, since they did, as I moved it around to try to make it fit better, the work they did showed. So I kinda just left it as is, as good as it was going to get. I could see it, but I knew what I was looking at, most would never notice. .

I thought I had to pull the rocker trim to move the fenders - turns out I did not need to move them. The repop clips that come with the trims are too long and distort the trim. I removed them and trimmed off 1/16" off the top and clipped the edges for easier mounting as shown below, as well as shortening the screw heads for clearance - worked very well!
Distortion went 95% away when remounted. I also buffed out the wheelwell trim also - noted with disgust the overspray from the previous painter who could not be arsed* to remove them. *I was podding Nicholas Moran, aka "the Chieftain" describing the Centurion AFV so some of his Irish color is bleeding thru here |

Hm. I need to go back and check mine to see if they're distorted, i remember them being very tight.
My one inner fender has the top holes drilled slightly off, and it pushes the bottom of the fender out some, I need to wobb those 2 holes out some too. .

My new ones looked and worked so bad, I made some of my own out of sheet metal. Looks and works good now.
It surprises me what they sell you. |

Doghouse is finally together - much better fit.
Rebent bumper fit together very well, only needed the come-along to move it towards the driver side. The spare bumper came with a pair of these clips - blasted them and they fit together nice. I wonder if they are a 72 only thing? Looking at making a new air cleaner decal, something period correct but calls out the fuel injection... |

Bumper looks great!
Those clips are what, for valance retention? Or do they touch the header panel? I can't recall if mine had those or not, but looks similar to what the GTOs/Endura cars use to retain the corners of the valance. .

yes, valance retention. I think it was an early assembly aid also.
Newer cars have them: the line workers stick on a part then they can secure it much easier. New cars pop together like Legos, older cars like ours are a real horror show assembly-wise in comparison. I seriously wonder if the assembly engineers and line workers even talked to each other back then? |

The bumper looks way better now, nice job on persuading it to cooperate. That custom air cleaner sticker looks very nice, great idea.

Today I was going to move the car around, take a few pix with the rest of the pack. After a go around the block I parked it. My apprentice noted that "your car is leaking oil".
Crap. Earlier when moving the lift arms the crossmember slipped off the jack and hit the oil pan and balancer. I checked it and seemed fine other than a dent in the pan. Evidently the dent pulled the pan away from the timing cover as it leaks bad when running. Needless to say the engine will have to come out. I may replace the solid rollers with hydraulic and helicoil the exhaust threads in the head among other things. |

On the bright side the crank was not damaged - just a bit of a set back.
