I “climbed” our Amish handyman last fall for killing a black snake that was coiled up in the sun on our back deck. He was told to NEVER kill a snake on this property unless it was venomous.

Went on a hike with my kids a few weeks ago and I stepped on this guy! It's a gopher snake, but the way my daughter reacted it may as well have been a rattler.

Black snakes are good. They even eat copperheads.

I learned something while researching snakes today. Snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous. If it bites you and you become sick or worse it is venomous. If you eat it and become sick or worse it is poisonous. That applies to any living thing I would guess.

I live in IN and have to contend with both timber rattlers and copperheads.

I was locking at a 70 goldenrod yellow firebird 400 in Glendale California once and reached under to feel around the 1/4 wheel lip the woman selling it went crazy and said are you nuts you can’t do that kind of thing in California between the black widows and the snakes .
The moral of the story is, I didn’t buy that car but I wish I had. *♂️

We have had a rattlesnake, copperhead and water moccasin problem here lately. Use to be Coyotes and Wild Hogs, with some building going on the snakes are all over the place looking for new habitats. I try to catch the black ones and bring them on the farm. Have killed around 16 venomous in the past 2 years.
A guy I know found this one in Ga a few years ago.

I've had numerous snakes on the property over the years, especially when a lot is cleared for new construction, mostly Eastern diamondbacks, but a few pygmy rattlers and one moccasin. All went rapidly to snake heaven. If it's cold and they are moving slow, a .22 is sufficient. A 12 gauge shotgun is way more efficient but messy. Shovels do the job but require getting more personal. A 5-iron works nicely but the head goes only 10 yards and tends to hook left. My weapon of choice now is a pellet gun (pre-charged pneumatic), basically a glorified BB gun, but quiet and it will put a .25 caliber pellet through the head of a snake at 50 yards (see photo).

And before the tree-huggers jump all over my case, know I spent 4 decades as an ER doc in trauma centers. I have first hand experience with the damage these critters can cause. One dead child sticks out in my memory as the victim of an Eastern diamondback envenomation. I realize they are just being snakes but they are not at all endangered and they can live their lives peacefully as long as it is nowhere near my property. I will not become a statistic.

when i was a kid, a neighbor cut the head off a large black snake. it was still moving, so i had an idea. i asked the neighbor for the snake, told my little brother to go in the house and get three toothpicks.
so i put the head back on the snake with the toothpicks, and walked in the house with the wriggling snake. my mom looked at me and said "what the he**!!!" is that thing doing i my house?" I said "don't worry, mom," popped his head off and threw it in the trash. You should have seen her face. My mom was tough to get, but I got her that time! |
