Default Trunk Lid Weak

On my 72 over the last couple of years I've noticed the hold open rods or hinges have gotten weaker. I now most of the time I have to lift by hand. I know the added weight of the spoiler is probably the problem but it has done fine for many years. Has anyone else run into this issue? How can I fix this? I see replacement rods are available, will this fix the issue? Thanks.

Not sure if the rods should actually be able to lift the lid with the spoiler...I have a Judge with original rods (driver side larger diameter) and even with the earlier/lighter wing, it will only rise a few inches when unlocking.

Once raised, it stays up and will not drop, which is what I thought the stiffer rod was intended to do.

There are three slots on each side to insert the torsion rods so as to give some adjustment on the amount of tension. Try by moving the rods one notch each and see if that helps/hurts.

I believe if the rods are in the furthest forward position (closest to the back seat), it's the most tension they can offer. That could be backwards, but that's my recollection from when I replaced a broken rod in my 72 a decade or more ago.

It depends if the car had a factory remote trunk release. The factory setting was that a manual trunk should pop open completely by itself (you control it with your hand still holding the key in the lock) but with a power trunk it should only open an inch or two (the logic being that when you push the button in the glovebox the trunklid doesn't fly open. The end result with or without a wing should be the same. Easiest way to adjust is to take a long socket slightly larger than the rod diameter with a long extension and adjust one side to the next notch and if necessary then also do the other side (usually though only one notch shift will correct it). Rule of thumb is tighten one side one notch if you add a wing and loosen one notch if you add a power trunk or leave it alone if you add both ;-)

Not sure I have a rod that's larger diameter, think when I was trying to source the larger one, there was conflicting information if there actually was a larger one.

I think mine are the same size, and on the last hole, and it doesn't pop up at all. And it doesn't stay up at all if you open it all the way manually.

Yes, it's an aftermarket wing.

Sure would be nice if there was a solution, maybe one from a different car?
