Bill,
The insulating/deadening materials mentioned only add maybe 5/16" extra height which is fine with the jute-backed carpets such as ACC. No problems in my three cars, but I did have to remove some jute from the pocket around the bottom of the accelerator to restore full travel.

That was my experience Les, right at that corner/point where the floor, tunnel, and firewall meet. I had to wrestle the mat to get it to actually stick down there in that corner, making several cuts, and even heated it a little. I worked it enough to where I didn't have to remove any jute though.

That reminds me that my second regret is I didn't run the stuff all the way up the firewall on the inside.

I already had my dash all asembled and the molded insulator pad in.

Same here when I did the clone, had the heater core box all in too, AC in engine compartment too. Eh, it still made a huge difference. Especially over stock.

Anyone ever weigh different versions of this aftermarket matting?

I only need something that is light & knocks down some of the heat coming up from the head pipes. In other words, over the hump & the first foot & a half of the toe pans & front floorpans.

Thanks guys. When I put the carpet in the '71 a few years ago I was given two rolls of material to use, forget the name of it. Anyway, it worked well enough, but the stuff is really thick and there are some spots that bug me because I just can't get the carpet to sit right. Time to yank it all up and start over.

Who makes the best sound deadening mat? Going to try that first before playing with mufflers.

Paul
Paul,
On your question, you will have a better chance at reducing/eliminating drown/cabin resonance by adding two tube shaped mufflers into the tailpipes, if possible. My Grand Prix had this problem which persisted through three different sets of long case mufflers and RamMat under the rugs until I added two cherry bomb style straight thru resonators in the tailpipes . Think of the exhaust system as a long tuning fork that can often cause this type of problem no matter how well it's suspended or isolated. Adding the extra weight in the tailpipes often cures your problem w/o spending $$ for more insulation or other testing other muffs.

The box of sheets I got really didn't weigh that much. Maybe 10lbs. If weight is a concern they make these products in thinner versions. For what I bought they make Damplifier. I bought the thicker Damplifier pro.

These mats only really control vibrational resonance and they can be effective with only 80% coverage. They don't control a whole lot with thermal insulation. I still had heat coming through the floor on my car and still contemplate putting in some kind of heat blanket.

I'm using one layer each of RAAMmat and Ensolite in my Formula. Pretty reasonably priced compared to Dynamat and tested very well. Here is their website:http://www.raamaudio.com/categories/...Foam-Products/

For heat I used the horse hair type carpet padding used in your house. and put it over the whole floor I also glued it to the under side of center console, it stopped all the heat I just cut it to the size I needed sprayed it with spray adheasive and put it down it is working great-----BOB

My vert does not drone with my home made x-pipe. A trick I have used on other cars is to clamp a piece of small angle iron to the head pipes. This will determine if its the pipe. They them can be permanently clamped or welded. Or better yet, place a resonator at this location.

If you have metal to metal contact, thats gonna be hard to stop.

Anyone ever use any of the spray in products like lizard skin?

Dave

REALLY? what diff does it make when it is covered with carpet? the foil helps keep the heat down.

Thanks for the link to the Damplifier. I'm not really worried about noise (running full length Dynomaxs), but am concerned about heat from the front of the headpipes. Car is being restored with its factory vinyl floor mat & will have to have some slight heat mat in the front floor pan area. From the factory, there was no tar paper sound deadener in the car.

When is the last time you held up some ACC carpet to the light? Kind of like spray on hair

I used the RAAMmat/Ensolite combo in my three cars and I'm very pleased with the results. The GTO's 550hp 462 is equipped with headers and a full 3" exhaust, but only a mellow hum reaches the cabin thanks to this insulation and LONG Goerlich muffs. GTO pictured:

I have the Goerlich's on the driver, all OE padding, and only WOT is what I would say is 'loud', totally acceptable IMO. And they have such a unique sound, really like them.

Getting ready to go through the driver's interior, will be doing all the mat, so am taking notes on this thread...

good to hear that Les. I really like the way it went in, it was easy to cut and apply without a roller. I even used it on the underside of the roof on the recommendation of the RAAMmat owner, can't remember his name but he was a nice guy and even discounted the total price below the sale price for me.

I am using the RAAMmat and Ensolite products in my GeeTOW Wagon project. Very easy to put down.
