Tony Bischoff definitely knows how to make HP. However this engine is no where near it's potential. There were other circumstances that held this engine back. Primarily the cylinder heads. They were off the 455 and were unscathed when the engine let go. So in an effort to save a little money my father elected to reuse these heads. The problem is that they are actually a bit too small for an engine of this size.
Tony did however rework these Edelbrock round port heads. They started life as ported Kauffman pieces that flowed 330 cfm. Tony took them, installed 2.25 intake valves, opened the intake runners as far as feasible, and some other tweaks to push them up clost to 360 cfm. In reality this engine could have used a much larger head to begin with. Tony works a lot with Lynn McCarty and helped them develop his Ram Air V heads. Tony said a set of these heads would push this engine to 1,000 hp easily on pump gas.
The problem is the price tag associated with it. $5,000 for heads, that need their own intake manifold, their own set of headers, another custom ground camshaft etc.... So here we are probably $8,000 later to reach 1,000 hp.
My father did exactly what I would have done, Got to 700 hp on pump gas and called it "good enough"
Also keep in mind this engine was dyno'd with the same 2" hooker chassis headers that are in the car, as well as an exhaust system on the dyno. So these are more "real world" numbers. A set of well designed "dyno" headers that don't have the limitations of working around a chassis that are so commonly used on dyno's could have easily bumped up the power another 30-40hp.
This engine was also dyno'd without any sort of vacuum pump that can usually be worth another 20hp or more on an engine this size. But we are getting ready to run a vacuum pump on the engine as we speak. There is a lot of windage in there with that big arm swinging around.

Also if you share cam specs let us know the spring pressure involved to control the larger diameter valves. Thanks.

Did you try running it with a pcv system and it wasn't able to keep up?

Sure Jack, here's the cam card. Steve, Let me dig through the invoices and find the spring pressures.

As a side note, lash states .018" and .020" but Tony found .016" straight across worked a little better.

TCS, yes the factory PCV setup has been in place since day one, and it worked okay, but my father has this bug about more HP, better ring seal and other things that Tony told him so I guess he just can't resist, lol.

Steve, on spring pressures so far I've found...

install height 1.915

240 lbs. seat pressure. Haven't found over the nose pressure yet.

I also noticed he used Crower severe duty roller lifters.

Thanks, similar here. I'm using the PAC-1243 (same spring as the Comp 943) rated 240 at 1.900". I'm also using the Crower Cutaway Severe-Duty solid roller lifters. I recently had them rebuilt by Crower and converted to bushings instead of needle bearings.

( If anyone is interested the service is about half the cost of a new set of lifters. https://www.crower.com/expanded-roll...available-now/ )

After losing a Comp roller lifter on drag week 2 years ago, I also had Crower convert/rebuild a set of lifters I had over to the bushing style. Regarding spring pressure, I also run 240 on the seat with my solid roller.

Similar months ago I had my first 'failure' in 20 years of using solid roller cams. While checking the valve lash during a routine check we found one valve would not stay in place, the lash would open up slightly after short use. We removed the intake and found one Crower solid roller lifter where the wheel was ground flat enough it had got into the lifter body and it damaged the cam. We checked the valvespring pressure and all was fine, that was not the issue. Sent the lifters to Crower and had them rebuilt and converted. Ordered a new cam from Bullet Racing and received it in about one week. We have no clue as to why. They had 5200 miles on them and the oil does not get dirty ( Red Line synthetic) and we keep tabs on the lash, which is .022". Also we monitor the valvesprings with a LSM brand on the head pressure checker.

I'm happy with the way everything has turned out and I think my son is to. He put a lot of work into it and we both like doing it. Hope to get to the track soon to work out any bugs and see how it acts with this motor..

Thanks

Now if I can just get dad to stop driving it enough to wet sand and buff it I'll be happy

My wife made those videos and I actually forgot all about it. I didn't even think about posting them here. Thanks Nmoreilly.

Hi Mr. Jones, Did you ever get this beast to the track for a quarter mile run?

Thanks

Yes we did, still working out some bugs, did 11.10 at 120 with correct DA 10.87 @ 123. We think it was slipping in 3rd gear at least it felt like it . Will check into it more, last time out coming out EZ did 11.3 @ 122 so we think there is a little more lol. Still have to down load the videos. Its OK for a street car pump gas motor. Thanks for asking.

You guys in high country are at the mercy of Mother Nature. Us flatlanders have it much easier.
