Where is the best place to purchase Baldwin filters? I see Grainger online, but not much of anything else reputable looking (except Amazon)

When I googled it Baldwin itself came up,
Amazon has the B9 for $16 There was another place that popped up, can't remember the name. My local Napa has the wix (Napa Gold) 1049 in stock. Online price is $22 before my discount. I order them from Fleet Filter in bulk. You can get the Wix 51049 or the Napa Gold 1049 for $10.98 each. You get 20% off if you spend $200 and they become $8.79 each. I generally get a half dozen for each car. Last edited by Formulajones; 06-27-2023 at 05:11 PM. |

Just bought NAPA GOLD 1049 OIL Filters
The four filters on the left(2 Wix, an ACDelco and the Purolator Boss) all indicate Made in USA. The Wix XP, strangely is a product of South Korea. One might imagine that the Wix XP being their “higher end” product would be made in the States, not so.

Yeah that whole made in the USA doesn't hold as much weight as it used to anyway if you really dig into how companies can get away with making those claims.
But despite that it still gives some people a warm fuzzy feeling, and these companies know it. |

A warm and fuzzy feeling....
"All departments of design, technology and laboratories around the world are constantly working together to create the best product. WIX Filters are manufactured in all MANN+HUMMEL production plants. We cannot predict what the world will look like in 20 years. We know, however, that WIX Filters will certainly provide filter solutions for the vehicles and devices of the future." The WIX Racing filters state made in the USA, printed on the filter itself. Not a filter, but not long ago I had a product that stated made in China right on the box. It turns out the box it came in was made in China. Not the product itself. .

Yeah not questioning Wix themselves just that everyone seems so hung up on the USA thing and don't realize how that varies depending on what state the company is located in.
For instance since we're on oil filters, one could have an oil filter business in a state that allows "made in USA" to be used as long as you perform some sort of function or process to said filter after it arrives here in the US. So hypothetically speaking the filter could literally come from china and all one has to do is install the o-ring seal and legally claim "made in USA" if you live in a state so inclined. So that phrase just doesn't hold a ton of weight anymore as these companies sub more and more parts from over seas. |

At the end of the day, all we want are products that work, especially when it comes to matters of engine lubrication. You’d think that wouldn’t be such a hard thing to do, but I guess we’re lucky that somebody still makes oil filters for our 50 year old gas guzzlers at all.

As much as I like to share the sentiment of "made in the USA" and be proud of it, in reality it's just not the case most of the time, and I've come to accept that. It is literally impossible to build a car from the ground up and have all parts "made in the USA" Not these days. Just be happy you can still buy something for the car and keep it going. |

I do a considerable number of oil changes at my home shop. I have 150-200 gallons of used oil hauled away yearly in my "retirement" I very rarely run into outright defective oil filters. But in the last month, I have had 2 defective Fram oil filters come through here. Very strange. The first one out of the package had some metal part rattling around inside the filter. You could hear it when shaking the filter. Sounded like a piece of sheet metal loose inside. Didn't install that one. The second one was on removal on an inline 6 Jeep 4.0L. When I removed the oil filter, only about 1 ounce of oil was in the filter and it was very lightweight. I don't know what was wrong with it but oil was not going through that filter or staying in the filter. It mounts horizontally on that engine and I have never had one come off almost empty. These two instances so close together have caused me to not consider using these filters moving forward. These filters are made in Greenville, OH, about 20 miles from my home. Not impressed.

Update. I ordered Hastings oil filters from Rock Auto for my Nissan Xterra and the wifes Mazda CX-9. They were around $5 each. They showed up yesterday and are Baldwin USA made filters and EXCELLENT quality. They have a metal "cage" to contain the filter element and I can see the metal bypass valve in the top of them.
I'd been using AC Delco but they recently started making them really cheap with a plastic cage for the filter element and I can literally crush the filter housing with my hand they are so thin, NEVER put a Fram filter of any variety in anything you like.......FWIW and IMHO........ Rock Auto shows the LF-222 when you type in Baldwin B-39. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...il+filter,5340

I saw that website and thought it was just another general merchandise reseller with higher prices. I ended up getting some B39s from Grainger (since I am familiar with them), but will try Zoro next time for the cost savings, if they are reputable.

The two top tier Purolators have been redesigned. These are the blue and black filters not the cheap red one. Everything I have read about them has been phenomenal so I started using them in my entire fleet and I mean its an oil filter, the cars arent suddenly capable of space travel or anything but cut open they do look a lot more robust than just a standard AC Delco ETC. It improved pressure on my Z71 so I will continue to use them.

Sitting at local tire shop getting new tires for TA.Im 'helping get in the way'. Owner got delivery from NAPA. Cut open case of oil filters,Made In Vietnam ' I said wow, guy said we have to pay them someway for the conflict'. Middle east will be next he said.
I thought Fram being made in USA and Ohio would be good filters esp the HPs which I used for years. |
