Jack White's LAZARETTO ULTRA LP & VINYL
Over the past 5 years Jack & Third Man Records have brought to life many ideas that were new to the century-old vinyl format. Today they unveil the Lazaretto ULTRA LP:

- 180 gram vinyl
- 2 vinyl-only hidden tracks hidden beneath the center labels
- 1 hidden track plays at 78 RPM, one plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record
- Side A plays from the outside in
- Dual-groove technology: plays an electric or acoustic intro for “Just One Drink” depending on where needle is dropped. The grooves meet for the body of the song.
- Matte finish on Side B, giving the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record
- Both sides end with locked grooves
- Vinyl pressed in seldom-used flat-edged format
- Dead wax area on Side A contains a hand-etched hologram by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science, the first of its kind on a vinyl record
- Absolutely zero compression used during recording, mixing and mastering
- Different running order from the CD/digital version
- LP utilizes some mixes different from those used on CD and digital version

"When Jack White appeared on The Tonight Show last month, it was to help idol/collaborator Neil Young make television history by performing, recording, and pressing a cover of “Crazy” in just one take. On Monday night, less than 30 full days after that historical evening, White returned to Studio 6B as a solo act, appearing in support of his latest solo record, Lazaretto. There, White performed the album’s title track for TV as well as “Just One Drink” as a web exclusive.

Prior to the performance, White sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the album, specifically the highly entertaining “Ultra LP” edition. After going through each of the LP’s hidden gems, from bonus tracks to an etched hologram, White joked it also “makes pizza and drives you to work.”

Anyone that promotes analog and is anti compression is A-OK in my book! I read recently where Dave Grohl is on a music project, and they lug two 800 pound two inch studio decks, probably Studers, around to get pure recordings. There is hope for analog.

I'll be putting photo's and info up soon on my new find..... Kenwood Eleven G, literally the physically biggest receiver I have ever seen.

Related - Neil Young's new album "A Letter Home" was recorded on Jack White's restored 1940's Voice-O-Graph. Kinda cool.

Monty Python released a long play record in the early '70s with dual groove format.
I think it was called Matching Tie & Hankercheif. My brother had a copy of it.

Dave bought the Neve 8028 console from the Sound City studio before it was demolished - now has it at home. Great movie to watch, an amazing list of history making albums were mixed with that board!

Checked our AT Turntable, and indeed it does play "quartz locked" 33, 45, & 78 speeds w digital record output...

One other option on our AR brings to mind: Wonder if any hidden "treasures" to be had playing this "Dual Groove" in reverse? Like a "Beatles Album in reverse: 'John is dead.'"

The eerie crackling helped to set the mood, but when the words "Here's to my sweet Satan" echoed through the speakers, I thought he said "Santa" and started to laugh and ruined the mood. I hated this song for years.

Some enthusiasts claim that when Chris Cornell used, "I love you Santa, baby; Santa is my king" as his hidden message, he was simply parodying other Satanic bands who hid messages from the dark lord in their lyrics. Joe Dirt, an elderly custodian who sometimes travels with the band, claims that the rock star meant to say "Satan," but he just pissed off the wrong sound mixer.

"This is my lowest point of vulnerability," explains Manson when you play this song backwards. It's an unusual message. But never fear, Manson is notorious for backmasking other messages, from "I'm gonna kill you, kill yourself, kill yourself" in "Dope Hat" to "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world" in "Revelation #9."

"In the dead of the night, love bites" is just one of the infamous messages spewed by Judas Priest. A different hidden message, "Do it," led to the band standing trial in 1990, after two young men committed suicide, allegedly prompted by the band's message.

"Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont." When I heard this message, I thought for sure I'd receive a prize for discovering the hidden meaning. I even sent a letter in care of the Funny Farm. Later, a friend told me that Roger Waters was simply referring to Syd Barrett. So I sent him a letter as well, but never received a reply.
