funny I just saw this on ebay..it is the correct original tilt cover plate but listed for a 69-76 corvette! Too bad the lock plate included is not right for yours.. anyway that is the correct cover .. now just have to find the correct lock plate! or drill the holes in your lock plate to fit this!.Are we having fun yet!??I would probably take up scotts offer.. sounds great!.here's the link for the cover.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Corvette-19...MAAOSw44JbYkBz

I would have to go out there and look again, not sure of the distance of the lock plate.

The wheel hub is a repop, not sure if it's exact or not, that's what I was kind of wondering.

Scott is going to send one he's got over, I'm going to try it, see if it works. If not, will shoot it back, if so, will shoot him some paypal bucks.

Thank you Scott!

I will make sure I post results to close the loop, may help someone else in the future!

Jonny said.."That plastic cover essentially covers from the front face of the lock plate back - nothing forward." I don't know about those "plastic covers but the original metal ones (covers) DO cover the lock plate completely..with the correct lock plate that is>>I I have an original 69-72 tilt column here in my shop and am referencing to it..just so y'all know

That hub is 99% correct... that was one of my jobs with PY/Max when we re-tooled it. Originally, there is an alignment line on the shoulder(the nut covers it) which lines up with the line on the steering shaft. Most people do not know this... The first generation hub did not have this alignment line AND the screws that hold the steering when to the hub are metric. When we re-tooled it, I made sure the screws are SAE and there is now a dot where the line should have been. The pattern is almost exact. Eastwood does not produce the crinkle paint anymore, so you can not get it exactly.

@ HWY

I think this should be re-read as to see if you have a problem:

Fully aware of the alignment line on the shaft, have done early 2nd gen 'birds for a long time.

There is an alignment mark on the hub by the way, never crossed my mind it wouldn't be there, looked out of habit. But thanks for the 1st hand knowledge mrgto69, that's reassuring!

The horn contact really can only go in a certain range anyway, you could always center it and align the hub to where it would work as intended. But the line makes it much more less-of-a-guess tasks!

Yeah, the Eastwood wrinkle paint, I wish, I had a couple pair of M/T valve covers I could have used some on! I have 1 pair left, fresh out of the box, sitting on the IA2 now. Not sure if I'm going to use them, my tastes have changed. But there is a nostalgia factor there, that car has always had a pair on it for the last 38 years. The hub paint looks fine to me tho. (wouldn't fly for the valve covers)

I'm going to have to re-mark the shaft tho, the puller has marred the top of the shaft, little of the line is left.

And thank you for the reference too Forrest, well appreciated! Yeah, the plastic ones snap over top of the lock plate, but the distance between that lip and the column hub was kinda what I was concerned with. I guess if it's close enough that it doesn't stand out like it does without the plate, I will be happy. Figure if I was going thru the trouble, would try to cover all the bases!

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate all the help!

The one pic on post 7 shows the alignment line, and the boogered up shaft from pulling it 20 times!

Great! those plastic ones have more "depth" than the original metal ones do!! That should work just fine!

Yeah Scott, that looks great, and like it will work!

Ben M. - I just went thru my box the column came in, dug all around, mine didn't come with one. Bummer. But that looks exactly like what Scott posted.

Wonder why some descriptions show it as working with tilt and non-tilt, and others list is as non-tilt only?

Here was a picture I did a while ago.

There should be plenty of plastic ones on eBay.

I looked on eBay, and the listings are all over the board. Some say for both tilt and non-tilt, some say they work with non-tilt only. Need to figure that out, and the application and year range.

Classic Industries has a repop cover, but it says that it is for 88-01 C/K trucks and 92-00 Yukons. The image looks identical, but it could just be a stock photo:

https://www.classicindustries.com/pr...ts/t70428.html

Another reason for getting the application range.

Ok, so what I did was I ordered one of the cover plates from Classic Ind the same day Scott shipped his. Figured for $3, I could afford to make a comparison, and if it didn't work, I would be OK with pitchin it in the trash.

Both got to my house at the same time, interestingly enough. Visually, both appeared identical, except that the repop had a few divets from the plastic casting/forming process. Both fit well, and both cover the same amount of gap.

The repop was a little shinier, a little more even in color, so decided to use it.

Thank you again Scott, please let me know how I can compensate you for the part and shipping, will make good on that.

Hope all got something out of this, I know I did! I would say that repop one is worth using, if you have the snap on lock plate, or are willing to switch to it. For 3 bucks, it sure beats some of the eBay listings I saw.

I don't mean to hijack HYYSTR455's post, but I have the exact same issue with trying to get the repop formula wheel hub to sit flush on my non-tilt column in my '70 Judge. I did post this on Judge forum. I have the original locking plate and dust cover, and when I reassembled it, I made sure that the "I" mark on the locking plate aligned with the notch on the steering shaft. I cannot get the hub to go all the way down. I'll try depositing some of the phots here later. on a related, but probably inconsequential note, I broke my original cancel cam and ordered a replacement. My original was n off-white cream color, but the rep part is green. It seems to fit ok, but I was just checking to make sure I got the right part.

Thanks
Frank

On original '69-75 Saginaw tilt columns, the Formula wheel hub, fully seated leaves an 1/8" to 5/32" gap between the column upper bowl & the alum Formula wheel hub. The stamped steel tilt dust covers & predrilledlock plates are one of the near 400 specialty core parts I pulled off boogered up tilt columns for near decades when combing crusher yards & boneyards. with the right parts,Robles disappear, the right parts doesnt mean NEW.

Thanks OPH
Mine is a non-tilt column. All I was doing was swapping from the standard wheel over to the Formula wheel.

I did get it back together, but the formula wheel does not sit flush. It’s better than the first time I did it but only after I filed away some of the plastic in the cam cancel that sits under the lock plate. The repo one does not sit flush against the lock plate. And it’s the wrong color. Grrr...

In addition to all that, AMES sent me the wrong tapered bolts to hold the wheel to the column, or they didn’t tap the column correctly. I think I read that these are supposed to be SAE threads, but they sent M5x8.0 bolts. I tapped the column so I could mount the wheel.

If you have an original horn switch I’d be interested in buying it.

At some point I will probably look for a tilt wheel as well, but I’m happy with just having power steering and a formula wheel for now.

Frank
