Most any parts store carries Lucus brand ps fluid, so just use that if you can find it.

I have never changed the PS fluid in my daily drivers and have put over 100,000 miles on several of them. I don't think the fluid in our toys would ever need changing unless you are slalom racing.

Like I said I changed the gearbox . As a result I cleaned out the whole system. I have this Prestone stuff on the shelf and want to be sure that it's compatible for my car that's all. Thanks, Mike

you should be ok, might just be marketing hype, but who knows
i just use regular prestone PS
the Syn version leaked, or should say dripped from the pitman arm seal area
suctioned out the fluid, replaced with regular, and no issues
it is an original box with about 100k on the car, so i can see why
i personally change the fluids once a year or so just to keep clean fluid in, especially in the environment i am in

There is a quality difference between different brands etc, and it is supposed to be changed. Not sure what the 'rule of thumb' interval is, but I wouldn't say forever.

Power steering leaks pretty much mean something 'attacked' the seals, and I know for a fact going back and forth to trans fluid is a leading cause of seal failures in steering systems.

I can say for sure to never use trans fluid.

I look at commercial stuff, like fleet/service type for power steering fluid. I bought a case of Swepco 715, and that has lasted me for a while on multiple cars.

https://www.swepcolube.com/products/...hydraulic-oil/

Can shop it, it's about $10 a quart, so it's not expensive.

Ok, generically speaking:

"How many years does steering fluid last?
between two and three years
Most power steering fluid will last between two and three years or between 50,000 and 75,000 miles. It isn't just a matter of replacing it, however. According to Ganther, “It should be flushed. Some manufacturers will give you a specific time, or it can be gauged through a visual inspection."

This^^^. PS fluid doesn't wear out unless it gets overheated or contaminated. I run mine forever, only replacing it when I need to replace a hose or rebuild a pump. We're talking decades and 100's of thousands of miles. No issues.

Just like other fluids, the additive packages break down, and eats at seals & hoses. Ever grab a PS hose and have it turn your palm black? Or sticky?

You choose, it's obviously up to the end users' discretion.

Same with PS hoses too, they should at least be inspected, and probably replaced every 10 years or so.
