In an effort to rectify the multitude of questions regarding what component gets what degree of black gloss I am compiling a list.

My sole source for this information originates from the "Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide 1964-1972" and seem to have found a conflict or it was not made clear.

In the early pages of the book, the authors included a diagram that indicates the suspension components (control arms and stablizers for example) are 'Chassis Black'. A few hundred pages later the authors indicate that these same suspension components are 60% Gloss Black.

1) Is 'Chassis Black' the same amount of gloss and 60% gloss black?
2) The firewall, is it 30% (as the underside of hood) or 60% gloss black?

GDK,

I will add this to your post. Paul and Chuck's book was written in the mid 80's. (Or at least my signed copy was). Since then a lot more detailed info has come to light. For instance, they note that all front suspension components are chassis black. Now it is generally accepted that the springs, tie rod ends, sway bar, etc. were left natural metal from the factory; and are now restored to look as such. (And judged as such) As far as the firewall, it should be 30% gloss, as it was sprayed at the same time as the floor pans and underside of the car. The inner fenders and radiator cradle, etc. were seperate parts coming in from other sources and were the higher gloss; also the heater box is the 60% gloss. The makes for an interesting contrast on the firewall, and by far the majority of underhood painting mistakes. Most paint everything the same gloss. 60% actually looks very glossy and you are likely to be told it is incorrect and too glossy! The remarks are the results of restoring and judging at the GTOAA in the late 80's and early 90's. I don't know if opinions have changed since then.
