Picked up the car recently and having problems trying to get this working. Nothing works at all and not sure where to start at. I did check the terminals at the switch and at the motor, no juice at all. No fuses blown either

To start you've got to get power to the wiper motor. So check both ends of the wiper fuse and fuse terminal clips for power with ignition switch on. Could be fuse box terminals not making good contact with fuse, bad fuse, then it'll be power to and from the fuse box needing checked. Power to the fuse comes from ignition switch. Power leaves the fuse box and goes through firewall bulkhead connector to the wiper motor. Check it out and post back

Cecked the fuse box and no power, bad fuse, looked good. New fuse and have juice to the motor and to the wiper switch. Put in the switch and no go. The switch is out of the hole and in the open. I put my tester on the switch and its hot even on the outside of the switch...is this normal because its not attached to the IP?
Sorry for being late, between school and work first chance i got to get back in the barn |

Sounds normal.
The switch is what completes the circuit, so it has to be grounded/mounted for the wipers to work. Cars with a real metal dash and switch just needs bolted down to work. Some switches, like for cars with plastic dashes, have a ground teminal on the switch with a wire to a common ground. Another type has a seperate metal strap that screws down with the switch, and then the other end of the strap goes to a ground. This statement; "I put my tester on the switch and its hot even on the outside of the switch", tells me your's just needs bolted down. BTW The outside of the switch shouldn't be hot in the off position. Get it mounted and let us know what you've got.

There should be a metal plate behine the light switch and the wiper switch. This screws into the gauge pod. Which in turn grounds the switches. If the switches are not grounded, especially the wiper switch, the motor will NEVER move. Ask me how I know that.
An easy test. Take a wire directly from the ground of the battery and hold it on the outside of the switch. turn the key on. turn the wipers on. Worked for me. 3 wiper motors later........ I removed that plate when I made a custom dash. It will be back in soon. then I can remove the ground wire. HTH Dave

I'd say Dave 1967Tempest pretty much covered it.
I was thinking flat metal strap instead of plate. Get everything grounded good and I think it'll straighten out the wipers and the light problem. Sounds like now the wipers are feeding back through the blinker from lack of grounds. |
