Default Steam Pockets Ugh!

Ok so I added a coolant recovery tank and for awhile it seemed my percolating steam pockets temp gauge jumping after about 45 minutes of in town driving was cured.

Is a closed recovery system the only way to go? right now when it happens it fills the recovery tank and spews some coolant out. then while sitting sucks the recovery tank dry.

the car always ran cool in winter of course. it still does really. i have a 160 t stat in and it holds steady at no more than 180 on hot days until driving awhile. then the gauge starts to jump wildly and i get the percolating.

i have the march pully system that spins slower, but i just dont get the sudden steam/hot percolating action. what the heck causes it???? the fix???

Thanks

Ok, need more info.

First, what do you mean by a "percolating steam pockets temp gauge" ?

How many miles on the engine?

Condition of radiator?

What kind of cap?

What kind of gauge? And where is the sending unit located?

Talking Steam Pockets Ugh!

Take your radiator cap to Autozone and test it! Then buy a replacement that works with the closed system.

Default Overlooked the obvious

As it turns out...

Installed the AEM wideband yesterday.....turns out I was EXTREME lean below 3,000 rpm and at idle. 16+ afr below 3,000 rpm and gauge pegged lean at idle. the exact range of my hot steam pocket issue.

adjusted idle screws to 13.2 - afr and now runs nice and cool no swings in temp at all. 180 max and steady cruise 165-170 degrees.

don't know how to get by without the wideband gauge now that I have it. removes all guesswork.

Exhaust port/collector. It measures O2 in the exhaust.

Can do a bung:

Or replace a collector/reducer:
