Default Dyno Results

Just got done running new engine on dyno so I thought I would share with you the results. The engine is a 428 +0.040 with 1975 5C heads, about 9.0:1 CR, SD "Stump Puller" cam with complete roller rocker valve train, RA/HO exhaust manufolds, '66 tripower setup and Pertronix ignition. I ran it on dyno in April and found a vacuum leak which had me stumped and frustrated. Turned out to be intake manifold gasket. See thread here: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=726734

Anyway, today the engine runs great and turned out 474 HP @ 5500 RPM and peak torque of 548 @ 3900 RPM with a real flat torque curve. No leaks, no pings, no broken parts. The mechanic on the dyno set initial timing at 18 BTDC because of the cam. It idles real nice now at about 750-800 RPM. I am very happy, it exceeded my expectations.

Wow, way more torque than I thought a 428 with a Stump Puller would make! I am planning a similar build. My engine will be a .030" over 428 using a 400 block, so 433ci. I have some 6X-4 heads ported by SD Performance with 87cc chambers to get 9.5:1SCR, an iron manifold "Ruggleized" by SD and will be using the 2.5" RA manifolds.
I plugged all of this in to the Performance Trends Engine Analyzer and it gives me 476ft.lbs @4700 rpm and 480HP at 5700HP. I would be absolutely thrilled to get nearly 550ft.lbs. of torque!

Great job!

Beautiful car!
I met a Lawyer in Tallahassee a few years ago that had a large collection of cars and OEM parts. His original car was a 67 Corvette with a 427/435 that he bought when he graduated from law school.

To say the collection (and car) was impressive is an understatement.

That's awesome power!! I'm looking forward to getting my 461 that CVMS is currently building with that cam. Compression will be at 9.4.

Do you know where your cam was degreed in at? Also, what do the heads flow?

Beautiful Vette too!! I love everything GM put out in '67!!

Ponjohn-The heads are ported slightly and I gasket-matched the intake to the heads. Not sure what they flow, they were not done by SD Performance. I bought the heads already done from a guy who was running them on a 455 Pontiac in a '74 LeMans.

Mchell-Those are corrected numbers according to the data sheets I have. I also asked the operator/mechanic how often he has the dyno calibrated and he indicated quite often as he is a stickler for accuracy as he does a lot of high end race motors on that thing. Not sure what the "secret" is, but I have picked up a lot of knowledge on this site!

Thanks for all the comments, I am very happy with the results. I was anticipating 400+ HP and hoping for 450 HP, this was very encouraging since I designed this setup and assembled it myself.

Awesome! That right there is Poncho power at its finest.

Looked over your build too on the original thread. Very similar to what I'm doing as well. If I wasn't sold on it before from what I was told in my thread, I am definitely 100% sold on getting a Stump Puller for my engine at this point!

I went back to read your other thread to refresh my memory on your build. In that thread I was worried about the lower compression you were running. I guess those worries are put to rest. This thread will be a good reference point for anyone needing to know how much compression is needed to run the Stump Puller. Please post the entire dyno sheet when you get a chance. I would love to see the entire power curve.

i have a very similar setup w/ heads being different (SD KRE).
haven't dynoed mine, but i do know is runs real strong on the street.

mine liked 16deg initial. took me awhile to get comfortable with that... but that what it likes.

whats your jetting? i am 75/65/75 here. thinking the ends may be a little fat.

thks for sharing the results!

Those are some impressive numbers, I wouldn't have guessed that high, congrats, sure you're happy!

Not only are the numbers a good reference considering the SCR, but 1.66 exhaust valves too.

Sweet 'vette too by the way! (Though I like the green ones!)

grivera - Will, when's that engine supposed to be ready?

Nice numbers! I hope to make numbers like those for my 1969 "XF" 428 one day.

Cam is installed "straight up", no advance or retard. I double checked this as I was investigating problem described in other thread.

Carb jetting is 0.061 center carb, .071 end carbs. While I was running it on test stand I had A/F gauge on it so I tried to dial them in as best I could to achieve close to 14:1.
