Default Tail stock too high?

1969 GTO 400 with unknown 4 speed.
I can barely get a business card between the front u-joint and body. Engine looks to be tipped forward slightly.

1. Why does the bell housing have a starter opening on both sides?
2. What type trans do i have? Has a tall 1st gear.
3. Is this the correct cross member and trans mount? Rubber part of trans mount is about 1 1/4" thick. Cross member is connected to frame with factory looking rubber insulators.

Help Appreciated!

Muncie. with drain plug it could be an M22 or replacement case. New motor mounts? worn mounts will let the front of the engine sit low, raising the tail shaft.

India Trans Mounts typically are about 3/8" too high vs the old factory transmission mount.

Also with a GTO you should have a biscuit type cross-member with a biscuit over each end of the cross-member with the lower part of the biscuit sitting on the frame and a mount compressing both parts of the biscuit downward.

Poly mount is tall too.

Yes the cross member attaches to the frame with a slip over insulator with a stamped steel strap holding it all down on the frame.

3/8's on an inch would help me sleep better.

Engine mounts look ok. Plenty of room between logs and engine cross member

The frame bent upwards where the crossmember goes from someone jacking the car at the same location and bending the frame upward would be my first guess.
Is the bottom of the frame flat at the crossmember attaching location, or curved upward?

Seen a lot of frames bent up in that spot, and also some cross members that have been tweaked by people putting the jack under the trans mount and trying to lift the car.

The frame is soft enough right there to use a good sized pipe wrench to grab it and straighten it back out. An additional piece of bar stock between the pipe wrench jaws and frame spreads the force out and helps. You'll be surprised at how easily it will flatten out. A pushed up cross member is a little more work, and best to straighten it off the car. We've done it with a shop press and chains. Really not a super critical measurement - just need it not too low nor too high.

The member to frame bolts are rolled in. Guess i'll grab it by the horns and buck the frame. Then see what it looks like.

....i had a 68 GTO that used to knuckle the U-Joint on the floorboard at Mid-Track.

Scary, annoying, and probably dangerous. Re-tweaked the crossmember and life is good.

If you've ever seen the A-body frame when it's NOT attached to the body, you'd realize just how terribly flexible they are.

The FIRST thing I'd be looking at is the body mount cushions and the cushion bolts/hardware. If the cushions or bolts are totaled, all bets are off on the frame--or ever getting it right.

That's where I was going to go too Schurkey, and thanks again for that tech ref, I've referred to it many times.

Other thing I was going to point out is the floor pan tweaks much easier than the crossmember does, one good way to tell is look from the back of the car through the back window at the tops of the seats. If they are tilted inward, the floor pan is tweaked.

You can either jack the floor pan some or grab the tops of the seats and pull outward towards the doors. F bodies have this problem too.

The clone (442) I have must have been owned by some 300+ lbs person, it was tweaked bad, even the mufflers hit.

After further review, looking like lift legs were placed in the trans cross member aria. I am slowly working a braud aria back and fourth. I am making progress. The frame is pretty tuff. I'm searching around for more leverage.

The seats sit square, unlike a 68 i had many years ago. Over all, i'm pleased with the body. Does not need floors, roof, or quarters. There are some questionable body repairs on the right front fender and a spot mid way up on the left quarter. And Someone With A Buffer Got Carried Away. .
