For a 1970 deluxe interior Firebird, I believe the manual window regulator handles should have the clear knob, NOT the black knob. Is this correct?

not clear...neutral...clear came later than 70 like 74 neutral is the goldish amber color and you can see thru it. Ive had 100s of NOS window cranks..and in 74 or 75 they had a redesign the cranks has more arc to it..

over years, they darken..but its a light amber if its never seen daylight..

some of my window cranks have ended up on RAIV frame off resto stuff..

be wary of ebay listings..they try to pass off the later as correct..ive seen people pay 400 bux for a set of cranks that are right for 78 chevy trucks..not muscle car era..

I guess this is the original handle that came from my 70 TA. Too bad there was only one when I got the car.

heres a hint..if the crank casting number starts with 200 number its wrong.. and will have a true clear knob..and the curve is so big..it sticks off the door panel an inch..

I have seen different part numbers on these. Do you have a breakdown of the correct part numbers for the different years? Some numbers may have changed because the part number itself changed, not the part, correct? The best place to find nice window cranks are the rear doors of 4 door cars from the early '70's.

yes..there are diff numbers...and some are superseded etc...

the look is the whole deal..be cautious of black and clear knobs..true clear...then look at the arc in the handle..the early cars the arc is flat..the later replacements have a prominent arc..i have pics side by side..let me see if i can find them

nope...those are later model service pieces..see the big arc...they should be flat..up against the door panel..i mean really flat....if the knobs are truly clear with no tint of gold at all.....they are later...the big clue is the serious arc...those set way off the door panel...i bet if you pulled them off..with out me ever looking..the casting number starts with 20XXXXX

the old ones are 9715291..if theres a - and a number..its the color knob..like -02 is for ivy gold and light green interiors in 68...i just happen to have one on my desk

the black ones with the same handle are for later trucks and black interior cars.

there are black ones..and i have some i will get pics and numbers

the number above is the right number for the neutral/amber handles too..they have other codes..like B8F and other jibberish..i have a blue, black, turquois , grey, and white pair and they all have the same casting number..

the colors are 68..and theres 2 knobs styles in 68..in 69..ive never seen a colored knob..but i heard a few people found real early 69 cars with black knobs..but who knows..almost instantly people where replacing cranks,..GM even made a service package to put knobs on handles......



67 has the same handle diff knobs...

must be an optical illusion to me...iput my glasses on and it still looks like a hard curve..but it could be because the pic is stacked and compressed by windows..it changes them at weird angles..but if it has the early number then its right..

the next thing is why clear...i have no idea..should be amber...unless you put them on new who knows..ig GM had handles and the manufacturer was starting to do the change over...they threw nothing away..maybe there was a run with clear...

in the 90s in the help section of auto parts...you could buy knobs and rivits to repair handles..they where black and clear...would be my guess..but who knows..its one of those mysteries..

i did a little research..i walked thru a salvage yard today..looks like the flat arm cranks came to use in 78 when the big malibus went to the boxy G-body..i looked at dozens of cars...and that 77-78 time frame seems right..there where trucks in there too same deal..there where no f-bodies

i have some parts books...i will try to figure it out..the newer cranks are superceeded as replacements for the early cars..and people are paying 4 or 500 for a set and you can go to any GM dealership order them for a 91 chevy truck and you will get the 20322800 series in clear or black...funny..

ive never pulled an NOS 97 number out of a box that was clear..in the box..with no sunlight etc..they are honey colored..very clear.. but a warm tone of gold..as soon as they hit the light and air....they start changing.

i sold bulletprrof some for his RamIV and i took many pics...and cant find them..but will look more...

inland NW (low UV) car always garaged 48K. may have been covered much also. I interior is 98% perfect original. back seat never used, etc. so never know, but both cranks changed do not fit with very nice door panels as a scenario. there actually is maybe a tiny bit of amber it seems in plastic, but not sure, see edge in pics. anyhow FWIW FYI mileage may vary deal.

Bird72, my understanding is that the '838 cranks are for the rear windows of 69s. Don't know how they might differ.

maybe on a firebird because of the hard panel..but the rears are the same on a-body..and i know..this is a f-bidy discussion..i will look it up..i have a 1970 master parts manual here...

Well this made me look mine are same as bird72. 9717838 it is flat and has the Amber knob. I honestly always thought the Amber color was just sun damage though.

Quick research shows me the 9727838 casting was used on many cars including Corvettes. So very correct repops are avalible. If it's is correct for a vette it is always repoped. Lol

Here I thought that they started out clear, but age & UV turned them to the "neutral" or goldish tint...

Drivers side apparently broke and was replaced with the

Patina is about right where the older knob is more yellowed than the replacement.

1969 Camaro used the same handles with clear knob as 1970 Camaros
9715291 knob for front and 9717838 for rear knobs

Pics below show the difference in the bends for the std vs deluxe handles for 1970 Camaro
Note the clear plastic has yellowed from the sun.

The 291 handle used with deluxe door panel does just barely clear the upper area on the standard door panel
(may touch in one spot on some cars)

None of my deluxe interiors (Van Nuys) have the added spring behind the knob

Jan April and Sept 1970 dated Camaro only parts catalogs do not list the spring

The spring is only listed in the GM of Canada parts catalogs for 1967-71 Camaro
