Default Ranking Roller Rockers for Pontiacs

For street/strip would we say roller rockers rank like this in quality and performance.

1. Crower
2. Comp Cams
3. Crane Cams
4. Harland Sharp
5. Scorpion
6. PRW
7. All the others.

Which of the above will fit under stock Pontiac valve covers? I know the PRW will.

In the stud mount arena, very impressed with Crower SS rocker arms. I can't recommend any aluminum rocker arm for sustained use on the street for thousands of miles. I am sure others will disagree and have some anecdotal evidence of aluminum lasting a long time. The simple facts are aluminum parts have a finite cycle life and a rocker arm is a stressed part. With proper performance valve spring pressure, they wear out, regardless of the brand. If your not going to use proper performance spring pressure, why change the rocker arms from stamped steel? So I would recommend Crower steel and then other steel rockers like Comp a step below. Just yesterday made 20 pulls on a 600 HP SBC with stud mounted Crower stainless rockers. 7500 RPM, 320 lb. seat pressure triple springs, solid roller. Worked very well.

My Scorpion RR's fit under my stock valve cover as did my old HS.

Every brand is going to work well....until it fails. Crower may be the best. I never had a stamped steel rocker fail, but I'm not hard on them either. The real test is street miles. I would never know there was a problem until I heard it. I have not have valve covers off in over 15 years.

I was doing a little web research on this very topic... BTW Steve, thank you for the article link. I was tempted to go with the Comp Gold rockers, but ended up deciding between HS and the Scorpion Endurance. Both made in USA, HS being rebuildable, and SCR having a lifetime warranty. When used in the right applications (meaning not all-out crazy power levels), I really could not find much bad press on either rocker. For the max of 1,500 street miles I drive each year, I think (and hope) they will do well for some time.

Interesting about lift ratios in that article... back in the day, I was running a set of stamped steel rockers purchased from Summit for a SBC stock car. The over zealous tech official DQ'd me (no, not ice cream), saying my rockers were greater then 1.5 that was allowed. I actually purchased another set and left them in the sealed package- just to prove i purchased 1.5 rockers! Of course they did not care, and lost my points for the night... rant over, but one of many reasons I said to hell with the local circle track.

On numerous combinations I have used Crower Stainless rockers, but then switched to T&D shaft systems with alum rockers. All have been with solid roller cams. One set of T&D now on my current street combo, limited use / fair weather. So far never had any issues with both types.

In my case my 1.65 HS rockers do but I use 2 cork gaskets glued together to give a little more room. Running repro chrome valve covers.

FWIW.....I had a set of H-S 1.5 rockers on my "48" headed '69 Judge with an Ultra Dyne which profiled a "068" camshaft. They fit under the factory chrome rocker covers with no problem.....

I run 1.65 HS diamond series rockers with stock height cast alum VC's and TIP's 5/16" reusable rubber gasket. I also used to glue a pair of Mr G's ultra seals before switching to the TIP gasket.

Dave Bisschop sells PRW stainless roller rockers, and stands by them. Despite the reported failures, I asked him why he would continue to sell them- his answer was simple. It's all about the prep- soaking them in solvent to get rid off any of the varnish or protectants used in the manufacturing process, blowing them off with compressed air, and then soaking them in oil before installation. Seems like what you should do to any roller rockers before use.

I have 1.65 PRW stainless purchased from Dave and have "paste" on my magnetic drain plug when I change the oil, but have zero valve train noise. I get that the oil can take up the lash, so I will be checking mine as well. Would this cause low power output as well?

I have less than 1000 miles on mine and I change the oil every summer when I get the car out. I just did my third oil change.

I also had the paste on the drain plug but not sure if it was rockers .After removing my PRWs there were 7 that were bad. I did follow the proper steps with prep.
I went to a Harland Sharp set. I run stock covers and to answer a fitment Question, mine fit with short locks and a set of thick Eldelbrock gaskets.
Have a set of E-Heads.

I like to use the 5/16" valve cover gaskets Butler sells. Has worked fine with PRW roller rockers.

There can be only one. (highlander voice)(stud mount)

Crower has a couple different shaft setups, make them in both stainless and aluminum. I was going to do some homework on these, and the TDs, compare weight, cost, etc. Definitely going shaft on my IA2 build.
