Default PS pressure hose question

What is this midpoint ferrule for on the PS high side? Is it to prevent the hose from kinking? I would like to remove it as I don't seem them in the service manual, but there would probably be marks underneath.

Or am i thinking wrong on its purpose?

Thanks, 68RT

The last one I ordered from Ames didn't have that ferrule on it, but the one I got from the parts store did. Not sure of the purpose, but it just looks janky to me. I just ordered a replacement, I hope it doesn't have one.

For sure not for kinking. with the lines indexed at 45degrees like the manual shows, they make a wide loop.

What the heck is that thing? Its really bugging me now......

Some sort of inline restrictor?

Is the one from Ames identical to the original. I probably need to get a new one, the old one looks pretty good, but who knows, it's 50 years old. I even went to the trouble to re-zink plate the old one but last thing I need is PS fluid spraying all over the place. I do want one that looks exactly like the original though.

I would really like to see some picts of the ames one& others too, if somebody has one that is. Also, Looking on other websites like rock auto this morning & it appears every mfg has that ferrule in the middle. Anybody know what that is about? I have never really looked at these all that close until now.

Coincidence that its near exactly in the mid point of the bend?

Might have found something. Check out the second bullet in the description for the Delco hose. I was just about to cut that ferrule off, but Now I am thinking there is a restrictor in the hose. Hmmmmmmm.

I purchased the hose that the OP shows from Rock Auto on the cheap. It did not fit very well and I actually had to massage the end which goes into the pump. It should be pretty close to a 90 degree angle and it was more like 70 degrees. If I were to do it over, I would have bought the more correct Ames hose without the 'restrictor'. Here's a pic from the Ames catalog.

I couldn't tell you where I got the one in the photo above in post #3. I bought it 15 years ago. Its amazing how many things are made for our cars now than there was in 2001 when I bought my 68.

So is it safe to confirm then this is a restrictor? Any idea why its placed in the middle? curious......

I just received a new pressure hose from Ames yesterday. It has a Gates parts number and doesn't have the ferrule/restrictor. It's a little different from the one I bought last time, but I'm sure it will work. The hose on the older one I have is the material wrapped hose that's shown in the first post and the steering box side of the fitting has a couple curves in it compared to the straight design of the new one.

Has anyone ever seen one of these fail? Just wondering if I should try to use my original which seems in decent shape.

I had a few leaking ones over the decades, But Could you imagine the disaster that would cause if it failed.......

It would just be messy. Steering system would still work.....just without power assist. I have my original hoses in a box somewhere. I don't remember seeing that fitting on there but can't remember for sure. Will try and dig them out and see...

As far as steering it would be no worse than losing a PS pump belt, which does happen. If it ruptured ... I'd probably be more worried about fire than anything else. Not sure how flammable it is, but yeah, gotta make a big mess.

I wouldn't want to have to clean up after a PS hose broke. That would be a total mess!

dataway, what's your original look like? Just curious about the steering box end and how it's bent.

Here's the two replacements I have.

Here are various pics of the original hose. It measure 28" from tip to tip without wrapping the tape measure around the pump side curve in the fitting. I think the bend to the PS Pump is over-bent a tad, I can see a very slight kink in it and it comes closer to the fuel pump than I would think is normal. I'll probably tweak it out a bit before final installation.

Looks like the new one is a closer match to the original except for the crimping

Based on a quick search of the part number it looks like the application is for a Chevy truck.

I'm surprised your original doesn't have any cracking. I replaced my original about 10 years ago because it dried out and was slowly weeping fluid.

It came off my 68 Lemans parts car (about 30 years ago) and was so covered in mung that it probably preserved it No visible cracks ... but I guess it's possible it was covered in mung because it was weeping. But then the whole engine was covered in mung.

Where did you find the black oxide nut & washer for your PS adjustment? Ive Been struggling with some of those fasteners & their colors. I lightly etched some zinc ones & painted them flat black in a few spots. Looks good, but then needs to be touched up if they get cranked on.

Ames has a kit with all the PS pump mounting hardware and spacers. The adjustment nut isn't black oxide in the kit, but the bolts that hold the bracket to the pump are.

Can you all tell I'm doing an engine compartment clean up project? I've never paid this much attention to power steering before
