Most of the time, I do not get very good tread wear on my vehicles.
I’ve had a number of Suburbans and Trucks over the years and they have been the worst. 5-6 years ago a friend from work told me he put 10ply tires on his 1/2ton Ford and was pleasantly surprised at how long the tread lasted.

At that time I had just purchased a new GMC 1500. I wanted to level and large tire the truck. I bought TOYO 295/60/20 Open Country AT III 10ply tires for the stock rims. They have been on the truck now for 130,000km(75,000miles) and still have 6-7/32s tread left. I have been running them at 35psi unless I’m pulling something.

This was the first Winter where I decided the the tread depth was not enough for our particularly snowy climate, so I swapped them out for Ice radials, but they will go back on the truck in the early spring as I am confident I can get another 25,000miles on them.

They have been a great all round tire, but are a little noisy on the road. I would be buying my third set of tires by now if I had made my typical choice.

Has anyone else tried/experienced this outcome with 10 ply tires?

Interesting post. I do some towing with my 1500 (24’ enclosed trailer) and always thought 10 ply tires would be a good idea but was concerned the truck would ride too harsh unloaded and when not towing. Do you find that to be true?

i always run 10 ply on anything that they make for the size. one of my old excursions i put a set of the bfg all terrain ko2 on it back in 2011 they have around 80k on them and still have good tread but since i rarely drive it and the age they are weather cracked to the point i wont go anywhere but around town.

On my tow vehicle I run 10 ply tires
that are LT rated and have a highway
tread that is all season.

I run the K02's on my Tacoma and so far they've been great. A little ruff riding as run at 50psi but great in the snow in MN.

Also remember there is more tread depth on a 10 ply vs the typical all season radial so they will obviously wear and last longer with regular rotations and proper psi.

In winter weather I run the same tire on my Excursion. Very satisfied with wear and wet weather traction. Around April I switch to my Michelins that ride nicer but don't have the traction of the BFGs. I have two sets of factory wheels, so that makes it easier.

Longevity and durability may be a trade off for some..

That's what we do, too.

My thinking is that a tire that's rated to support 3400+ lbs will last forever when it only has to support 1500 or so.

And we've noticed that when you run over a nail with a 10-ply tire, they usually BEND rather than puncture.

I lower the psi to 35 when unloaded so that the tread wear is even and the ride less harsh and it helps a lot.

Also I like the firm sidewall of the 10ply tires for the less mushy feel at the steering wheel and tires are noticeably more durable regarding running over square curbs, big rocks and as someone else pointed out nails.

There are no "10-ply" tires, that is an archaic term. Most LT tires are load range C or E and pretty much same weight. Quite a few are identical, the E range meets all the C requirements so they just manufacture the same tire and sell with both ratings.

Both C and E are generally about 20% heavier that the non LT tires sold for trucks and SUVs.

D are 8 ply for 3/4 ton
E are 10 ply for 1 ton

I’m archaic/ancient, so I hold onto outdated terms.
