I parted out a lot of cars in the 1980s to mid-1990s at a time when I had a fair amount of free and cheap storage space. I lost some of the storage space about 12 years ago and downsized in a hurry, scrapping a lot of stuff. I'm getting ready to downsize again, and I'm wondering if there is any demand for the more common stuff beyond the scrap value. Here is a partial list of some of the stuff.
- 4X heads with press-in studs, mostly 455 but some 400 sets - 66 and 7M5 heads - 1970 #15 heads (455 360HP) - 1969 #46 heads (428 360HP) - 6H heads (1976 455) - Point style distributors from run of the mill cars, maybe a few from XH coded GP motors - 3/4 and full windage trays - 1958 - 1962 early forged rods - 1973 - 1978 cast iron Q-jet intakes I suspect that shipping costs on heads makes them pretty much worthless, but I wanted to check before I started hauling stuff off. |

Generally the 70 15 heads, 4X 400 heads and windage trays are good movers

The 1969 #46 heads are nice for 350 builds. Points distributors in good condition can be sold for a few bucks if you’re wanting to put in the effort. Early forged rods might have some takers but again it takes time and effort to move them.
Besides the items that Paul has mentioned scrap it all or give it away locally to a Pontiac guy. Shipping is a killer so unless someone local wants the heads and intakes…..almost nobody’s buying.

Thanks for the reply.
I ran a craigslist ad for the 46s & 15s last year for $100, had a few replies but shipping was too high and it wasn't worth the drive. I also ran a listing for a number of the points style distributors for $20 each, had no interest. I was thinking about removing the valves from the 400 & 455 heads and saving them, but I'm not even sure if that is worth the effort. Most of those were pulled in the 80s and have never had a valve job done on them. Mike |

Old used 2-piece factory valves can fail and unless you’re willing to take the chance or are really bucks down they belong in the scrap heap along with the heads.

Good point on the valves. I was thinking that valves might be hard to find at some point, and they might be worth saving.

Do a single ad on the 1970 #15 heads.
Hype the 87cc chamber in the headline. Eventually they will sell locally , I suppose. |

I have been trying to get rid of some good used parts for FREE and have had no takers. 1 item is a set of forged 421 OS or 428 standard pistons with less than 5K miles on them. I only removed them because I super charged the engine.

Asking in general, would any of those heads do well on a .030 over 428? It currently has 670's on it as built (never fired).

I’ve used stock small valve 1970 #15 heads on a YH 455 build that made 390 hp through log exhaust manifolds, stock cast iron intake & q-jet carb. It has a Summit 2802 cam. We had the press-in rocker studs pinned rather than converting to screw-in studs. They have been fine for 5 years of street use with no pull-out issues. The valve springs have 120 lbs. seat pressure and 270-280 lbs. at full lift (.466”/.488”), so relatively soft. After a minimal cutting to true up the deck surface the chambers measured 90-91 cc’s and 9.94 to 1 compression on the .040” over 455 (464). We used Ferrera 1-piece stainless steel street valves (1.96”/1.66”).
The stock small valve heads flow around 195/150 cfm at .450” lift that the 2802 cam provides. It’s an easy 400 hp/520 lb.-ft. engine with RA manifolds, a little more with headers. I believe Stan has various 1970 #15 heads on his head flow list that had 2.11”/1.77” valves installed that flowed as much as any other stock large valve head of the time (12, 13, 16, 62, 64, etc.) around 210/160 cfm. Rocky Rotella wrote an article for HPP magazine years ago flow testing stock 455 #15 heads and then again after converting to 2.11” and 1.77” valves. I believe these are on Stan’s list. I think these are good heads to keep/sell/reuse/convert to large valves. Dennis |
