I too am interested in this. When I was putting my GTO together, I wanted a modern gear reduction starter (I have run a 4.3L V6 starter on my 454 for 10 years without issue). I spoke to my local starter guy. He got a Buick nose for my Chevy starter. Problem is like you described. It would work with a smaller flywheel. He was looking into fixing it, but I havent talked to him in a while. Keep me posted on what you find. I'd be interested in a spacer if you come up with something. I do not want to modify the block in any way.
