You could get 500's with black wall or the standard white wall. I had a set on my Oldsmobile. Never had a problem with them. Firestone contacted me to get a free replacement set which were called Firestone 721's. After the replacement, my new rt. rear tire threw a portion of the tread....full contact patch about a foot long. Good thing it was a rear and I was only going about 40mph.

Those "721" replacement tires are the reason I will never own anouther set of Firestones as Long as I live, the tread on my Rt front split after only 3000 miles, I was 19 years old and the dealer insisted that the tires showed signs of "Severe Abuse" From my mighty 76 GP with the factory 350 2bbl!!!!!!
After arguing with the Dealer and Firestone I congragulated them on losing a customer for Life. They Snickered asI left. I still bad mouth them every chance I get, and it has been over 35 years.

Cammerjeff, right at about that time I recall my uncle worked for Firestone in Whitby and the stories he told of what some of the young lads used to do while on shift (as I now think about it) would explain some of the related failures people are posting. cigarette butts, coffee cups etc thrown into the presses and vulcanizers. Just reread your post "Jeff" and if you had a new 76 GP chances are those tires were produced in Whitby. I was 14 at the time and uncle was a nooby there. Ed

FWIW, I had GoodYear Wrangler do exactly the same thing as the Firestones on a Jeep Cherokee. The tire separated under totally normal driving conditions, and you could see that it had been recapped yet sold as a new tire. There was a whitewall under the RWL sidewall. "They are all like that" was the response. They had been bought at Sears, who tried to charge me for a new tire until I told them I wanted my old tire back so I could take it to my product liability lawyer I used to work for. We settled on them just giving me the vehicle and not charging instead of giving me the old tire.

They are all like that. If you "curb" a RWL tire enough times.. it turns into a whitewall.

a few years ago I had a guy in the tire distribution business tell me that after firestones ordeal with the explorers tire blowing deal that their quality control is over the top. I bought a set of transforce at tires for one of my excursions and I put around 80k on them and only replaced them because of the age of them I got worried. they still had at least a 1/4 inch of tread left on them.

The problem with the firestone tires started long before that, my mom had bought a 72 Impala & it had those exploding firestone 500's that had all 4 replaced in the 1st 1000 miles. Then 3 of those got replaced in the next 500 miles. My dad took the car back in for the last set & made sure they put on a different brand of tire which were goodyear that lasted about 40k then. But I have to ad that the only reason they replaced them was were are related to the dealer. Otherwise they were just kept on putting on more of those junk tire by order of chevrolet.

Not when the rubber peels back with he RWL and there is a whitewall UNDER the RWL. It was a recapped tire for sure.

When a tire is recapped... Its only the tread area...not the sidewall....or not that high up on the sidewall.
