FWIW, I had GoodYear Wrangler do exactly the same thing as the Firestones on a Jeep Cherokee. The tire separated under totally normal driving conditions, and you could see that it had been recapped yet sold as a new tire. There was a whitewall under the RWL sidewall. "They are all like that" was the response. They had been bought at Sears, who tried to charge me for a new tire until I told them I wanted my old tire back so I could take it to my product liability lawyer I used to work for. We settled on them just giving me the vehicle and not charging instead of giving me the old tire.
