The problem we have with this hobby, is that there really isn't a good intake choice in a dual plane design that covers all applications.
I'm not sure what Edelbrock was thinking when they designed the RPM. It has several runners that are flow compromised by the design, it's too tall, and relocates the carburetor to a different position as well. The Performer has tiny runners, so it's going to start becoming a restriction with higher HP applications. We saw a 15hp difference on the dyno on a pretty mild 455 we built here a few years ago between a Performer and my stock intake. Even worse, we back to back tested a Torker 1 as well, and it was down over 50hp from my iron intake! The reproduction HO intakes are OK, but they didn't clean up the basic design, the port miss-match is at least as bad as or even worse than the factory units. The single plane intakes, like the Street Dominator, Torker II and Tomahawk, really need at least a 1" spacer to show their colors. We've had to add a spacer to every single one we've ever had on the dyno to get good number from them....FWIW. Without a spacer they are even down further on power with spread bore carbs. I suspect the huge secondary throttle plates sticking deeper into the plenum causes distribution issues. I say this because anytime we've been down on power testing one with a q-jet, ALL the power comes right back when we add a 1" spacer to them.....Cliff
