IIRC, the 399683 capped nuts were used by every GM division except probably Cadillac. They were a royal pain to deal with because tire shops would often over tighten them using air guns, and next time you tried to remove them the right way with a socket the stainless cap would spin on the nut.
Snow flake lug nuts were flat top, maybe even a little concave as I recall.

That's the casting number on the outside of the drum. Often, but not always, different than the part number.

Consider something like the water pump for the 1971. Assembly part number is 9790522. But it's made up of several individual parts. Impeller, shaft, bearings, seals and the main housing. The main housing might have a casting number like 482138, but if you try to use that number to look it up you typically won't get anything.

One of the more extreme examples is a carb. We might know it as part number 7041267, but it is made up of a few individual castings, jets, float, etc.. Actual stocking part number would be different than that.

You get the idea. I just didn't want you chasing your tail any more than any of us might usually do. Part numbers can refer to one or more casting numbers. In the case of the brake drums it is a one to one relationship.

Oh, and if Lloyd or someone refers to their MPC they might come up with a drum part number for 1970 and 1971 of 3841176. So you might be inclined to think that must be the part number for the 3993560 casting number. Unfortunately, not the case as the part number 3841176 has a casting number of 3841177 as seen here - and that is a pretty penny for each rear drum.

Here's four of hundreds of small NOS parts I bought at the dealership that my Uncle Kenny worked at. These are dated 4/02/78.

Part number is

479854 10.240 All F SCREW, escutcheon to shift bracket. (8-18 x 4 1970 1972)

No box, but the picking tag has the part number and group clearly shown. You can see I have always been a bit detail oriented like all of you and loved Trans Ams. Even at this time they were likely bringing stuff in for me from other places since they rarely had things like this in stock.

Nobody else has talked about these by part number other than a thread started by me in 2009 and no pictures from then so I thought I would at least post some pictures of these even though they are not assembly line correct numbers as Ric confirmed for me before. Only so much was available even by the time I was buying bits and pieces.

498159 7.243 All F BUSHING (lower) 13/16'' diameter shaft) 2 1970 1975 7-9

And that answers why these are so tight on the 7/8" diameter shafts.

I've always puzzled over what the finish was on those screws. Seems like even the tiniest amount of humidity would start them rusting. Have just been painting them with a fairly flat black paint as a better than nothing fix. Any ideas on the finish?

Hi Ric,

Yes, I have seen a fair share of rusted ones and always thought some seemed to rust rather quickly. And not just the top. The sides and threads all rust about evenly top to bottom on ones I have pulled. Sort of a complete rust. And then, I have pulled examples that look fine. I don't know everything about a single screw, but I know I have also seen both a longer and a shorter example.

I don't know if any of you have dabbled much in Fords or not, but they sure make the whole finishes thing a lot easier since they have almost every piece of hardware listed in their MPC along with the finish. Right in the part number as a suffix. You may have seen similar in some GM publications. In fact GM spec'ed the same finishes using the same suffixs with a few exceptions that I have seen Ford use. I know in at least a few cases where they got their hardware from the same vendor.

Just to mention a few, there are lots more examples than just these. But, out of these I think you can probably guess which one I think it is.

-S - Plain (often rubber and plastic parts not intended to be molded in a color)
-S2 - Black or Dark Gray Phosphate and Oil - 72 hour salt spray test
-S3 - Black Paint - 16 hour salt spray test
-S5 - Copper Plate - no specified corrosion resistance requirement
-S7 - Cadmium Plate - Soft Silver - 24 hour salt spray test
-S13 - Chromium Plate - Interior - Bright medium silver - Plated steel parts - 24 hour salt spray test
-S15 - Black Oxide - Jet Black - No corrosion protection
-S32 - Black or Olive Drab Enamel - 96 hour salt spray test
-S47 - Chromium Plate - Exterior - Performance requirements shall conform with ESB-M1P70-A
-S101 - Special
-SX - Wax Sealer - Honey Colored - Use of the letter "X" as a suffix to other Standard Part Finish designations indicates that a sealer, of compound wax or other thermoplastic material, is applied to screw threads over the specified finish - shall meet requirement of Engineering Specification ESB-M4G80-A

Default One more for today

I'm not listing all possible applications for these parts. Just the one that covers my car. And certainly some are later service replacement parts.

479592 10.260 All F COMPARTMENT 1 1970 1975 10-3

3913468 3.023 All F BOLT, tank strap 3/8" - 16 x 3 3/8" 2 1970 1972 3-3

410431 3.028 All CAP (non vented) 1 1971 1971 3-4

5651702 3.110 F FILTER (IN TANK) 1 1976 1981 3-6

There was also an alternate cap gap other than 410431 - I've sold some of both to people and don't have any of the alternate left.

408679 was the alternate gas cap for 1971. Shaped a bit differently than this one in just about all regards. If anyone is interested I might be able to dig up a picture of one.

Did somebody set you loose in the warehouse with a shopping cart? Seriously, how did you come to own all of these rare & obscure parts?

Hi Chris,

A variety of places over the years. When I was a kid I used to ask for specific small parts for birthday and Christmas presents. After I got out of the Army then it was a few things from Year One when they still had some NOS parts - not much from there, really. A few years later then my Uncle passed away and some things were on the shelves and in the cupboards at his shop where he worked after mechanics went non-union in the 1970s. That was where I learned many things from my Uncle. My folks would send me to his house for the summers, basically to get rid of me and have one less to deal with and my Unk was a good teacher and his only son, my cousin Steve, was off to college when I was still a young teenager so they had room at the house for me.

Two of the rarer parts I have that I haven't taken pics of yet - came from his shop - identical pieces to each other so I'm sure he bought them at the same time.

We would work on Firebirds, GTOs, Mustangs, all the way up to very large Ford dump trucks. He would take on anything old and get it running. My Uncle would make me do things by myself like remove the harmonic balancer bolt from one of the big dump trucks. His usual advice to a scrawny teenager was "What would you do if I wasn't here". Got me thinking outside the box at a very early age.

I was on eBay for a long time buying things for my wife like missing pieces of her dishware pattern when it dawned on me that it might be a source of parts so some things from there in later years.

And I have a few friends that were, or their parents were, in the business back then and can still get a thing or two from them or some of the other obsolete parts vendors through the dealer to dealer network (D2D).

Junk like that.

My Uncle did not store parts well so the wrappers have yellowed over the years and are not in good shape, but I found these on a shelf as we cleared out decades of parts he had accumulated. So much old crap for 1940's to 1990's era cars. Tons of gasket kits for engine rebuilds, seals, bearings, etc. etc..

A few other things of interest, like the intake manifold gaskets, but these I remember jumping up and down when I came across them. Dated August 8th, 1970. One has never been out of the package but one side of the wrapper is the see through plastic so I can see the other one is the same date.

Nothing too amazing here, except for possible the last item is sort of cool.

I mentioned how Bill talked me out of an NOS stripe kit I had for a RAIV he was working on. The big pieces had been stored all rolled up and the backing had peeled away in a number of spots and I wasn't sure if they were viable so I decided to let him have them.

But, of course, he didn't need the hood decals so I still have them. Then a few other odds and ends. I wasn't sure what LD meant or if that gear was correct for my application without a little more research. Mike, or anyone else, if you know please feel free to chime in. I know you have more experience with the gearsets than myself.

A little update for today. Not exactly date coded rotors like Bill apparently had - but not too bad, either. I couldn't find those or the caliper pistons in the online MPC.

Thank you Brian. I feel good that I've been able to share some, too. Seems like quite a few people here have bought some parts from me at one time or another. If I recall for you it was some upper control arm shaft kits like these. I hope they worked out OK for you. This isn't the same set, but very similar.
