How early?
Mine are both raised. 71 and 72 with a slight beveled edge and grooves like Mike shows? Not much of grain at all...

My original '72 is the raised design and my original '78 is the flush design.

I believe the raised emblem was used on the '71-'77 knobs and the flush emblem was on the '78, '79 and '81 cars (sorry to derail the thread, Chad).

I'm enjoying the conversation. I'll definitely be needing a better knob now that I realize the differences.
Some of these part numbers that are not mentioned in the Assembly Manual can be a little tricky to figure out, if at all. These are the original 4 hooks from my car. They all look the same from the front side and are molded in blue to match the rest of the car interior. They came color matched in a number of colors, I saw the others during my searches, but only looking at blue right now. Looks like they used a single part number for 1970 and then carried that number over for the "Coat Hook" but gave the other two a new number for the "Storage Hook" which has a group number in common with the seat belts. Although the blue should be different so I might still have one of these numbers wrong. 9817975 15.388 23...................... HOOK (blue) 2 1970 1970 **15-8 9838734 14.875 AllF.................... HOOK, shoulder strap stowage (blue) 2 1971 1971 **14-1 ![]() Although they look the same on the front side the back sides show vastly different colored inserts in the two sets. ![]() No wonder they went on strike.... Chad .

Here's the only four 1971 specific color match "Coat Hook" that are listed in the online lookup. Seems like several missing....
9867280 15.388 All...................... HOOK (saddle) 2 1971 1971 15-8 9867284 15.388 All...................... HOOK (jade) 2 1971 1971 15-8 9867286 15.388 All...................... HOOK (sienna) 2 1971 1971 15-8 9862639 15.388 AllA&F................ HOOK (sandalwood) 2 1971 1971 15-8 .

My center emblem was mint. It easily came off, and was swapped onto the NOS knob..

That's a perfect example of the later style knob with the flush emblem. The early knob has the emblem mounted proud of the horizontal plane of the top of the knob with silver band around the emblem almost completely exposed.

Well, it now matches exactly to what was there... Maybe '77 was different yet. The center emblem has a chrome band around it.
