Got a few pics from a collectors 66' auto 2+2, look at the linkage and tell me what you see, i don't know what's factory and what's custom, i just want something that works that doesn't look homemade, the other pics are at the shop, got the block off plates made and ready, the quarter panel pic is for arohed or anyone that needs it, looks nasty to me and has bondo slathered on there as well but someone might want it.

Here's a picture of what at first glance appears to me to be original linkage. it was a quick google image search for 1966 pontiac tri power. It's not too up close but int he future when you see setups, at least you'll have a better idea of what original more or less looked like. I know AMES and Performance Years sells repro linkages, ebay usually sold a good little kit for about $100 with most of the pieces. Just mentioning some options! |

The linkage as pictured in the attached photo of a '66 Tripower I recently restored, consists of the slotted rod, center carb lever, rear carb throttle lever, and misc. studs & bolts, along with written instructions. I manufacture the linkage and sell it for $50. If you have any questions, PM me.

Ok Mike and Dick both of your pics appear to use the throttle cable, which would indicate a gto, the big cars i've seen all have the solid rod coming from that hinge thing on the firewall, does this make sense? maybe just the auto tri powers for all size cars have the solid rod, i don't know, and allmost every tri power picture has a different bracket for the return spring. I think i'm starting to develop a idea of what it needs to look like, but if someone had a linkage photo of a bone stock auto big car tri power that was in the car, it would help. Still waiting on parts, i guess i could have sprung for air delivery but i'm too cheap.

If these help here are pics I found of a 63 and 64 gp autos (I know I know not 65) but it gives you a idea for full size cars, pics show the top rod has a plunger system? to give the play before the end carbs open up, bottom rod goes to kick down linkage (picture you show only has two rods but you said it was a auto car?) as for the linkage on the 66 2+2 thats all custom stuff I have the same junk/stuff on a 64 tri set I have.

My '66 GP has got a set-up with solid rods that snap together & are rigid. I believe it is a factory 4 speed linkage converted to use on an Automatic. The Pics you have there look to me like that linkage would be subject to binding up. The angle of the linkage with respect to the plane of the outside of the 3 carbs is critical from my experience. The drooping on that rig is asking for trouble. I have to stomp the crap out of mine to engage it & that does not look like something I want to be stomping on.

65FATCAT,
The '66 big Pontiac linkage is identical to the GTO except for the stud that engages with the throttle rod from the firewall. The big car center lever has a ball stud that the throttle rod snaps into. The kit I described for the '66 big car Tripower has that ball stud instead of the straight one the GTO's use.

when i get a chance ill snap a few shots of my end carbs. the stuff mentioned in google sounds more like a lube where what iam talking about is a silicone type stuff but made to hold upto gas. it just brushes on around the edge of the blades and where they meet the bore. there use to be a guy name....i think carbdr on ebay that use to sell small tubes of it for about 20 bucks, its real hard to find

Car looks much better with the parts car chrome on it, it's in pretty sorry shape but looks decent from 20 feet, can't afford to have it redone right now.
Got the manifold on the parts car, still need distributor, vacuum line parts, linkage parts and various brackets to hold it all before trying to start it, i'll keep updating as i go along. Thanks to all for the info. provided. |

as for my setup... i'm about $300-400 away from the rest of parts I need (sounds like a lot but it's just a few small things here and there that add up)... More importantly I have a 65 setup and a 64 engine so I my manifold won't work with it.. This really slowed down my install :-)
Mike, Did you ever get it installed? If not yet (because of the heads), maybe I can assist you: -I have a 64 intake you can use your carbs on -I have 65 heads; #76 Gary |
