I've only gotten that question once, from a kid in his early 20's. I sized him up for a second and told him, "You don't have enough money." He just kind of nodded and walked away with his buddies.

I always get the ".....my uncle used to have one just like this, but a different color and it was a four door...oh, and a different year, but it was just like this."

One guy came up to the 1964 Bonneville, asked what year it was. When told, he said, "No it isn't."

I can't wait to get this stuff with my '68. Heck, I get this kinda stuff with my dad's Model A and '33 pickup. The Model A will be a real fun one to argue with people about.
I think '69 was just a great year for muscle cars in general, that's why people guess that stuff.

I have heard all the above myself. I've even been asked if my 71 GTO was a 67. Some people are major idiots but after all the years of being around muscle cars, and cars in general sometimes I have to ask a question or two, and I can just about always tell if someone is trying to BS me.

A few years back I was running Cadillac color matching wheel covers on my '63 Lemans Convt. (Hey, they were forty bucks and it completely changed the look of the car.) I could not believe how many people were fooled. I especially got a kick out of the know-it-all types trying to impress the girl friend by announcing that this was when Cadillac knew how to build cars. I have Firebird Snowflake wheels on it now and 9 out of 10 can't figure out what make or year it is.

My 12 YO niece and her friend are from Sweden and are staying the summer with my mom down the street. My niece loves riding in the Firebird, but her friend has no idea what a classic American musclecar is about. Until Saturday when I took them for a ride to the parts store and 2 people gave us the thumbs up and another was chatting about the bird in the parking lot. They started to understand just how cool it is to have something that attracts attention and doesn't look like a jelly bean. Even when it vapor locks in the parking lot and the water pump seals blows.
The funniest is when I open the hood and people see the OHC6 Sprint and tell me it's not stock, no 6 cylinder came with a 4-barrel carb and sounds like that. I show them the owner's manual and sales brochure and they just don't get it.

The most common comment I get is "nice Bandit!", followed by "no T-tops?", even though I got a blue 74 T/A . I gave up explaining after a while .

I've had the "what year chevelle is that" question about a dozen times. "is that a tri power?" comes pretty regularly. I've also had 2 or 3 guys volunteer that they lost their virginity in the backseat of a car "just like that".

"DAMN!" is my favorite comment though. Sitting at a traffic light and a guy drives through the intersection and you can see "DAMN!" from his lips as he spots the car. Or cruising into a cruise-in and hear somebody say "DAMN!" as the car rolls by with a bump from the tailpipes. Or "DAMN, I had one that same color"...........

Had a guy on the left of me in traffic leaning over, "nice car, what year"

"69"

"Uhu, my parents had once just like it , a 65"! (I`m driving a 69 Firebird, first year made was 67...his parents MUST have had that rare factory "special" early model)

" ok"...lol

once having a burger, sitting close to the car (Firebird) as two guys come and sit down with their burgers...
one guy " look, nice GTO"

the other :"no I think its a Firebird"

"how do you know"?

"It says so right there on the fender" (smart guy!)

with my 61 2 DR Sedan I had that question thrown at me by a smart a## snobby b!tch, I replied more then your p----of s*** import. She retarded, NO WAY! I then told her to figure it out herself and handed her the log from when I filled up and how many miles i drove and how many gallons it took to refill. She got her calc out and tried it 3 times then apologized to me for being so snobbish. Guess 22mpg from the ole economy 2 bbl 389 wasn't what she expected!!! I then offered to drag race her nissan sx, and she said, no, I already know if it runs like my grandpas ran, I'd lose.

My LeMans has Rally 1 wheels on it (I will rectify this situation hopefully within the year) and while I was participating in the boardwalk parade at Ocean City some guy yells, 'hey, that jackass has Plymouth wheels on that Pontiac". I yelled back "they're Pontiac Rally wheels, douchebag". Ahhh, good times.

We were at a car cruise two weeks ago. A guy is really checking out a 69 Camaro that was next to my GTO. I was standing behind it so he walks up to me and says he had a Camaro exactly like that, EXACTLY!! Then he says, what year is it?

Jim

That's not too far of a stretch though. My step kids and even my dad had trouble with that when I had an 86 Regal for a daily driver, and it sat in the driveway with the 84 Monte. I just told them the Regal was 'boxier' looking.
