I've got front and rear license plate frames On the car that say 1966 GTO on them. I also wear a black hat with 66 GTO in it. And every time someone asks what year is it. Are people that blind or just plain stupid.

The most fun tho is having the 66 grills with the 67 wire mesh in them installed, and out at a show. Then they walk back and forth from front to rear several times with that confused look on their faces. And they still can't friggin read.

I love it when people ask me what year my car is.....it's got 1960 car number on all four sides of it !!
But the real funny incident was in Bolwing Green at race a guy was walking aounnd my car in staging lanes and finally asked..."Who made this car...what's a Ventura?' Then it dawned on me.....since I put glass hood on car nowhere did it have any PONTIAC emblems..just Ventura badging . I have since put PONTIAC decals on hood... + one on rear sail panel "Damned Ole Pontiac".. Seems there was a LITTLE (74?) Ventura behind me..

People, except PY members, are that stupid. See, they're so freakin' confused, surprised and caught off guard by the sight of an old car that they wouldn't dream of driving, that they ask the dumbest questions.

I love how you guys are all bashing the uniformed general public (ok some are deserved). Do you notice/remember every little thing about every car you ever had a passing interest in? You have a cool car and people see it, some will appreciate it more then others, thats life.

2 years ago i was not a car guy in any way shape or form. I was/still am the dumb punk you guys all hate. I know a 67 firebird sprint well, but you would struggle to fill a thimble with the knowledge i have of any other car. But, having worked on a 40 year old car for 2 years, i can appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into restoring a classic automobile. If you guys hate all the attention the car draws, idiots or not, why the hell do you drive the car? Maybe put a "do not bother me with questions" sticker on your bumber.

Not bashing anyone....just laughing at myself when I realized why the guy asked me "who made the car?"....I'm not a car show guy but I do appreciate the comments made about my car...whether in jest or fact...really. It's been called anything from land barge to two tons of fun...I built it to race but sure enjoy the attention it gets..I do realize this car is much older than most people at the track.....me too..
Must admit I have to guess at few cars myself...

A few years ago, a couple of us from Naples decided to drive up to the Plant City BOPC show. Our little caravan consisted of a '70 Judge, '71 TA, '62 Grand Prix, and my '66 GTO. After the show, the '62 Grand Prix got a little cantankerous (the owner hadn't had it long, and was still working out the kinks), as the starter relay was starting to go south. It took my friend getting under there with a screw driver, while I worked the throttle to get it going, twice, since we stopped at Sonic too..

Once we started the trek home, I was leading the pack, because I knew where we were going. It was starting to get dark, when my phone rang. It was Doug, in the Judge, telling me that one of the tires on the GP was about to go, and that we needed to stop and change it.

We had just passed the last gas station for about 10 miles (which was in the middle of nowhere about 7 miles south of Bartow FL) about a mile back, so we all turned around and went back to it. We open the trunk and I was relieved to see that he had a spare in good shape, as I was really starting to feel lousy and we still had a solid 2 hours of driving ahead of us. We pull the spare and jack out, and not one of the 5, college educated car guys present could figure out how to LOWER the stock jack enough to get it under the car. The irony is that I ALWAYS bring a floor jack and full tool kit on these trips, but was feeling crummy, so I didn't bother.

As we stood there like a bunch of idiots in the waning light, an older woman, dressed like a homeless streetwalker with a "faces of meth" look about her, came out of nowhere, and made a beeline to the GP, completely ignoring the much nicer (the owner hadn't done much to it yet) and better known TA and 2 GTOs! She starts in with "I had one just like this in HS, and I was the fastest thing in Bartow with a 421 and tripower" etc.....

I was half paying attention, trying to figure out how to lift the GP enough to change the tire, so I could go home and submit to a Nyquil coma, as she was swooning over the GP. She kept going on and on, and I was getting a little annoyed with her. In an attempt to shut her up, assuming that she was full of crap, I turned to her and said: You used to own one of these? She said yes. I then asked her if she remembered how to lower the jack, as that's the problem we're having. Without hesitation, she said "Sure, you do this, this and step on this and it goes down"....

Darn it if she wasn't 100% correct!

I went into the gas station and bought her a 12 pack of her favorite beer.

What are the odds of running into the one person in 100 who would know how to work the thing? Especially since we were really in the middle of nowhere. She walked from somewhere, but looking on a map, there aren't too many houses within a few miles.....

Then we got lost in Arcadia......

He caught up to me and spoke first, saying "...hey, that's a sweet little truck!" or something like that.

I confided that I had noticed his truck , too, so we spent several minutes talking about (red) Chevy pickups, then onto working for GM and living in the area. I told him gradually about restoring the truck through the summer, giving him short snippets of info and then responding in more detail as he, obviously interested, asked more follow up questions.

I haven't mentioned this yet but, because I knew author Darwin Holmstrom was going to be in Chicago and because I thought it would be cool for him to sign my book (under the spot where David Newhardt had signed it), I had my big GTO book laying in the front seat of the truck.

As the pickup truck conversation died down a bit, he said "....I see you've got the new GTO book. Have you had a chance to look at it much?".

I didn't tell him that I'd had been memorizing it since May but did indicate that I had flipped through it a time or two.

At that point he said, matter of factly: "My car is in it". Surprised, I said "really, which one!?!".

His car is the red '61 Catalina, shown early in the book on pages 40 - 45. He got pretty good coverage spanning over several pages.





So now the conversation was off and running again, this time talking about Pontiacs, and how he got the car painted a year ago, and how the motor is out now (spun a cam bearing) and going back together. I told him my car was on page 99 and that we did the photo shoot in November of '07 pretty much across the street from where we were currently standing. We marveled at the fact that we lived only a few miles apart and never had met before, and how unusual it was for us to meet under these circumstances.



I bet we stood in that Wendy's parking lot for almost an hour before we finally decided we'd better get going, parting ways but vowing to stay in touch.

That was one of the most bizarre chance encounters (and one of the most enjoyable) in recent memory....

Well I've always been a car guy. I grew up around tri-five Chevies, SS Chevelles, Z28's, Plymouth Road Runners, Hi-Po Mustangs, etc., and various vintage pick-ups along with my first car being a 68 442 Olds when I was 15. So I pretty well know what is what at car shows and cruise-in's but every so often I may get thrown one I'm not familiar with, like the 47 Lincoln V-12 that came to the local cruise-in last year, or the 57 Cadillac I posted about a while back, but I'm not fooled very often. And Troy's that 60 of yours is in better shape than most of the new ones that are built these days. And the fact that you have been able to keep the vintage look makes it look that much better.

Had a guy knock on the door last year and ask if I wanted to sell my T/A,I told him that I may be interested in selling but wasn't looking to sell it and didn't care if I did or not.
He asked what I wanted for it and I said 15 or 16 .
About 2 months later the guy came back and the engine was out of the car,he said he had a buddy that would buy the car but I would have to put the engine back in.
I told him that I wasn't interested in selling it anymore,he pleaded with me and then said that his buddy would bring the 15 hundred cash right over but I politely declined the offer.

Had a couple of guys ask if my 70 GTO was a Javelin.
I love to talk cars with people but sometimes the silly questions get to be too much then I just answer yes to every question.
