I like the video!
I still have the question. Do you heat up at Hwy speeds (between 2800 & 3200 RPM's) with the fans on? Mine will kick on at 185 and they will continue to run up to 210 or so until I idle back down. |

But it runs cold..... My Tempest never gets hot on the high way under normal conditions. I am not talking about this 100* crap. It has the Mark VIII. I have the low on at 195* which is supposed to be for the high, but I have the wrong temp sensor. But on high, the car never gets over 190* at idle even in this heat. Make sure that you don't have anything in the way for air movement. Because at high way speeds you should have more than enough air through the rad to help it cool down. What do you have for set-up and your rear end ratio. I need more information to help with your problem. Dave

Well I did notice one thing. It seems that not all mark VIII fans are created equal the one in the Tempest seems to run slower than the one in the Catalina. They have different part #'s!!!
More to come as I research this...... THANKS!

Tempest 110-02
Catalina 110-03 I can get the full part numbers if you need them. But the Tempest runs right at around 170* in this heat. BUT, I will try to find the faster one for a replacement!!! I will take a vid of both so you can see the difference. Dave

[QUOTE=1967Tempest;4038323]What are those numbers? 60 foot times? Revolution of under/overdrive??
![]() that is correct. It is currently being underdriven with my 6" crank pulley, with the 8" it will be like it was stock or last year, be a good test to see if in fact it does cool better By speeding up the water pump, then I may try that fan again? Yea that is how this test went the first time it would stay at 170 in the garage ,but get it out driving it would heat up, But My 180 sensor didn't seem to come on til 195 according to my temp gauge and the laser gun. so then driving down the highway with fan on high it was still around 190! I just don't like it that hot,lol.. Question on my autometer sensor if it spins at top where u put the wire is that bad? or is that normal for that sensor? what kind do u have?

I have the one that Hollister sold me. Not sure of the manufacturer. But the Wagon is running on 2 toggle switches.
I talked to Hollister. No need for an on-off-on switch as,you when you turn the fan from low to high, the low shuts off. This way you can turn the low when the car gets to around 150* and leave it on. When need turn it on high. HTH, Dave

Yea, But don't u have a seperate sensor for your gauge tho?... So u are runnign two toggles and not using the sensor to kick in the fan at a set temp?

Gauge is mechanical in 1 port in crossover. HIGH sensor is in other port of crossover, but hooked up to low speed. (got the wrong one) High runs off of a toggle. Catalina: Low off of one toggle , HIGH off of another. Mechanical gauge. Intake only has one port. If you want serious cooling, it should be the other way around for your pulleys. 8" crank. 6" water pump. This will over drive the pump by 1.5~ish. More like an AC set-up. HTH, Dave

Grandville455 has brought to my attention a test of the Mark VIII fan Vs. SPAL dual 11's.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...pal-duals.html In trying to keep an honest view, it looks like the Mark VIII/Thunderbird fan only pulls 2700 CFM!!! Tom Dewitt, the tester, makes an excellent thread and an honest test. As I have had extremely great success with the Mark VIII fan, I would say that it is a toss up. SPAL Dual 11's PROS: TECH support available Company Reputation Ease of purchase Product WILL work and Cool CONS: Price ~400$ for fans and controllers If it goes down, availability of repair parts Mark VIII/Thunder Bird or Taurus Single 17 or 18" PROS: Price cheap (WHAT I PAID 30$ for fan 60$ for Controller,8$ for mounting hardware) High availability BIG cooling numbers for price CONS: Custom install If used, reliability NO TECH support other than forums/users Knowing this data and using it going forward either one will cool your Poncho. Just how much you want to spend and how you want it to look. I only write this as a lot of people email me asking me the specs and how I installed this. I don't want to be biased. HTH, Dave

EXCELLENT Dave!... Found this too on them, the true lincoln fans have a white socket on them where the plug goes in. the thunderbird/ cougar ones have a black socket and are two speed and have the same blade setup as the mark 8., just picked one up from a 93 mark 8

Well, that didn't work!
I finally got my throttle cable from Ames, and was able to put about 100 miles on the car. After spending a bunch of cash, time and effort, I am right back where I started. Sorta. Before, with the mech fan, HD clutch, 180 degree standard flow thermostat, AC shroud and Rodney Red, my temp when moving was 195. At stop lights, it would creep up to 210+, but as soon as I got it moving, it would go back down to 195. Always. Now, my idle temp is 195 with the fan wide open, and my running temp creeps up to 210+. NOTHING has been changed on the engine. I have a Taurus fan, DCControls fan controller, baffling around the radiator. I tried a high flow, 160 degree stat. No change. I tried NO thermostat at all. No change except that it would take longer to cool off when idling! I drive this car a lot, and this is simply getting frustrating. Heat has always been an issue. I fixed the idling issue with the electric fan, but now I have the opposite problem. Oh, and I clearanced the water pump divider plate to touch without a gasket back when I put the engine together. |
