What about this Ed,
Since the Rocker Shafts are going to be custom, how about adding additional "Countersunk" fasteners through the rocker shaft's base. You can space the extra fasteners between the current rocker stud holes. Picture adding additional threaded inserts, maybe of a smaller diameter, between the current holes that you would have already upgraded with enlarged threaded inserts. Sorry to see you having all these issues. I'm surprised you haven't sold the lot and called it quits!!!!!! Glad to hear you are talking to the right people and getting things lined out. I still can't believe the engine was not o-ringed during the build...that's crazy with a boosted engine with 10 bolt heads.....
Good luck and seems like you are staying optimistic thru all of this.

I do have a theory as to why all the rocker stud holes had to be welded up and relocated. Take a look at the picture of the mockup RA-V head used to fabricate the headers on the left and compare that to the one on the right. It looks like all the rocker stud holes were originally drilled in the wrong location.

Vendor Reputations mean nothing with a Disgraceful engine build as this, Lynn McCarty and BES should be ashamed of putting out such a POOR quality engine which with-out even run by you needs to be completely rebuilt and all these problems corrected and more problems to be resolved when the oil pan comes off. Hopefully there are no metal shavings in the oil pan.
What about all the wood shavings all over the engine when it was delivered. The oil drain back holes were drilled to high. It looks like all the original rocker holes were drilled too far to one side. What a mess! Can't you Return the heads due to being improperly machined, Less then the Quality you would expect from a New Head. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE = I'll take my business elsewhere. Now, I have looked at this thread, stopped reading it and now have come back to it.
Those rocker pads look like they have been beat on with a hammer. Hard to believe it came out of BES shop like that. Not saying it did, or did not but WOW. Never liked the choice of rocker arms. I do not use dies cast aluminum on anything. I consider them junk. And then they "cut" on that junk. Would not use that balancer on a 600HP street engine either. But the "shavings" behind the bolt is pure fishy. Those shavings are from a metal lathe and would never come out of a engine for any reason. They came from a machine shop floor. Are you sure they were not put there on purpose and a pic was taken of it ( it could never happen in real life) to embarrass or publicly shame someone who you now have a problem with. I can see you being upset. But those shavings did not come from any engine. There is no way they can appear in that spot. Unless someone at the shop decided for some reason to put them there (and why would they want to do that) or the person who received the engine put them there and took a picture. If those "shavings" were "packed" behind that bolt at 160 foot pounds they would be crushed flat. Not laying there like they were tossed there for a photo shoot. There are things us looking in from the outside do not know about either side. It is all kind of strange in this weird public way. But something about this whole thing does not pass the smell test. Good luck to both sides. |

The picture you are referring to was taken after they picked the metal out of the hole. Below is the before picture. Both pictures were taken by them. I also called Tony and asked how that could have happened. He explained that it could have been missed when the crank was cleaned by his guys, as the top of the crank is higher than eye level. All they do is reach up and stick a blow nozzle in the hole to clean it out. Whats the saying... two sides to every story and the truth lies somewhere between???
30+ years in business to business as a service tech many times caught in the middle between what sales sold and what customer bought. That old saying always applied. Sometimes most of blame was on the sales side other times it was the customer who was more to blame. Maybe 3 incidents I recall where our sales person was totally to blame and once for sure it was the customer (a former employee). Everything else fell in the area somewhere between. I've no dog in this fight not going to take sides. I do think this forum, especially the race section, is not the right place or way to resolve this matter. |

If the balancer was was a "press fit" and later honed for a slip fit I can see some material possibly being in that area. Chips of metal, do not think so. Is the balancer a "slip fit" balancer? The only way that chips could be there is if the crank manufacturer did not clean that area of chips when they machined the bolt threads and Tony's guys did the air hose deal and the chips still did not come out. If you mount the drive off a aluminum motor plate you'll see flex in the plate when you try to tighten the belt. Without the trans attached I could move the motor back and forth just by squeezing the belt between the pulleys. This caused me a belt tracking issue when the trans was bolted up. Just a FYI |
