Alvin,

Good question;simple answer. We MOVED! I currently possess an IN concealed carry permit as IN is my legal residence. I can legally carry in 27 states on that permit. As soon as we established FL as our legal residence, I'll get a FL CCW and convert my IN permit to a non-resident permit. The ONLY state I can't carry in with IN permit south of the Ohio River is SC. MA is a totally different ballgame. It is a FELONY to have ANY firearm in your possession without a MA permit. This VIOLATES federal law which allows you to carry a properly stored firearm in your vehicle. When I used to drive to CT from IN, I would stow my pistol in a locked case through OH(doesn't recognize IN permits INSPITE of the fact IN recognizes OH permits), carry it in PA(legally; PA recognizes IN permit), then have to restow the weapon, lock the ammo in a separate box, make sure I had my copy of the federal law stating a COULD care a properly stowed weapon in my vehicle(per the NRA Legal folks), fuel up and cross the NY border praying I didn't get stopped. Once in CT, I didn't carry my pistol. I completed all the required paperwork, but didn't send it in since we moved here. I'm REALLY NOT planning on spending more than a couple of days in the northeast EVER again...........

When I get my ccw I'm gonna use a ruger lcr revolver in .357 and shoot .38, maybe even use "shot shells" so I don't have to be accurate to hit the perp.

Ofcourse that's if that's legal.

That's because OH supposedly has more strict standards that one has to pass to receive a CCW.

In the same light.
Florida will not recognize an Ohio CCW either, but Ohio recognizes a FLA CCW.

However, FLA will grant a non-resident a CCW, which is why about 90% of the CCW's issued in Ohio are actually Florida permits.

An OH permit gets you about 21 states of reciprocity, Florida will get you the same 21, plus about 12 others. IIRC, that is.

Jamie,

That's why I'm going to convert my IN resident permit to a non-resident permit. Additionally, I'm looking into getting a Utah non-resident permit. IN recognizes just about
EVERY other states' permits with the exception of Vermont, which doesn't require a permit to carry.

Buy a car and you can do the same thing. Based on that comment you should not own a firearm.

Ofcourse that's if that's legal.
"Shot shells" use #9 pellets that are good for snakes, but I would never consider using them for self defense, as they would be less effective then a .22 cal.

If you concerned using .357 mag. ammo use .38+P. at a minimum. Many experts suggest you practice with .38 ammo, in addition to using .357 ammo, but recommend .357 for self defense, for maximum effectiveness.

To me gun's are one of those thing's that first impressions mean alot when I first hold a new gun. If it fits your hand than it worth trying out. Nothing worse than buying a new gun and finding out 200 rounds later it kills your hands. So I say it does not matter what caliber it may be as long as she can handle the gun. I am a fan of the 40's as well but some do not like the recoil. To me some of the 9's have just as much snap becuase of there smaller frame. Which I find hard to hold when you loose the pinky finger. Some of the sub-compact guns do have a finger extension's. The biggest problem I have is there is to many guns I want but my wallet will not allow this to happen.
Good luck and have fun and be safe.

That's the key. Unless your practice ammo is also your defense ammo, spend the extra money and always get some practice with your defense ammo before you pack up. You will probably notice three obvious things. More recoil, more noise, and the holes in your target are now appearing somewhere else.

The .40-S&W was developed solely as a compromise to the 10mm. Some federal agency (whose name escapes me now) wanted something more powerful than a 9mm, and they tested with a 10mm, but they found with certain agents (particularly females) that they couldn't bring the gun back quickly onto target after firing a round...the recoil of the 10mm made it so that multiple "taps" weren't accurate enough as they were with the 9mm.

So the .40-S&W was developed, which for lack of a better definition, is a 10mm short round.

My main handgun is a H&K USP-40...I love it.

That would be the FBI. And the 10MM was dropped for the .40 because the 10 would hammer the gun to pieces and break the slide and body quickly.

Brian,

I had a friend that owned one of the first Bren 10s( what Don Johnson carried in "Miami Vice"). I would have rather fired a .45ACP than a 10mm. VERY unexpected recoil. It was the FBI that requested the .40 S&W.

So, while a 9mm isn't the optimal choise for a defensive weapon, it generally carries the most rounds. When someone is in fear of their life, shooting in a spray n pray, making noise manner, more bullets are better than the size of the hole. (that said I wouldn't go smaller than a 38/9mm)

Personally, I carry a 1911 and have shot competitively enough that I'm confident I can make my 8 rounds count. My wife, she needs as many bullets as she can get.

Just teach your loved ones to put two in the chest, if they keep coming start shooting at the head. Find a pistol that is comfortable to carry, hold and shoot. If the pistol doesn't meet all of the above, chances are it won't be there when needed.

Take her to a store and find something small and manageable. A reliable .22 will protect her. In a gun fight there nobody takes out a micrometer to see who wins the size contest. besides, it has to be something she can hide, access, and shoot easily. Just make sure it has an intelligent safety. Small guns can be very dangerous if the safety isn't designed right.

I have been shot at dozens of times. Seriously. I have a single bullet hole in/out scar from getting hit once. That hit was from a shooter above me in a second or third story window (never identified the shooter). Once I was shot at from across the hood of a car, five rounds from six feet away, and every slug missed me. I wasn't shooting back either. Thug punk kids don't have access to shooting ranges.

Personally, I like the feel of a .45 1911 due to my stubby fingers. I can't hit a barn with a Glock.

I've been out of the repo business for many years now. So i'm not to current on the threats out here, but from things I hear, there are more guns than ever on the street.

Here's an excellent article on CC and weapon choice.

https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/ccm...9&utm_content=

Blurb from the article: "...the average gunfight is three shots in three seconds at three yards.".

.22's can really f u up.
A buddy was shot leave'n a bar late one nite.
Guy just walked up to him, raised gun, and fired 1 shot into his left upper shoulder.
It exited thru his right kidney!
Spent 3 days in the hospital.

Gentlemen,

There IS a reason WHY SpecOps use a suppressed version of the Ruger Mark II. It is EFFECTIVE! The thought of a 60gr, subsonic hollwpoint bouncing around inside a human head should be chilling to anyone that understands ballistics.
