Like I said the Tundra is my first choice but it will come down to finances and the availabilty of a reg cab and short box. Been looking at local Toyota dealers inventory and have yet to see one. Hopefully I can order one. Still it has to be in my price range. The company I work for has a fleet of Tacoma's so I'm aware of their longevity. Since the truck will be an extra vehicle I only average 6-7 thousand miles per year. So any truck I buy will be a rust bucket ( thanks to living in good old NYS.) long before the rest of the truck goes.
It is a matter of personal preference. I work in a repair facility that services all makes. If you buy any make full sized pickup truck and take care of it with proper servicing, you will get as much use out of it as you want or need. If you abuse it by not doing regular oil changes, cleaning the undercarraige, tune ups, etc, you wont get excellent service out of anything. It is all about how you take care of it. FYI the 4.7 in the new truck (yes even as big as it is compared to the previous model,) will give you a lot better real world gas mileage than the 5.7. It will still have adequate power for most situations.

What make the Tacoma's in our fleet so impressive is they don't get regular maintenence. The oil is suppossed to be changed every 5,000 miles but it never is. Fluids are never changed, maybe an air filter every now and then but I can't say for sure. No regular cleaning plus different drivers and yet they keep on running with very few problems. 2 have over 300,000 on them.

I had one with the big cab and the smaller V-8 engine. The thing was a total turd! It was slow. The gas mileage was worse than my 71 Chevy with the 396 Pontiac under the hood. Granted it was a nice truck and everything worked well. I was totally disappointed with it performance wise and mileage wise.

Apparently all of the 200k-300k plus mile GM trucks I am familiar with are flukes. Damn you, GM!

Keep drinking!

I'm not drinking any Kool Aid, I've owned GM products before and had nothing but problems. Crappy tranny's, leaking intake manifolds, hub bearings, water pumps, and alternators that don't even hit 50,000 miles. I'm sorry if it annoys me that my car keeps breaking down while I'm still making payments. They had their chance to earn my business and my brand loyalty by simply producing a reliable product and they failed. I'm not one to waste my money by giving them multiple opportunities to piss on my money.

I have to agree. I was so loyal to GM, despite all the crap that they sold me. My trucks, a lousy GMC Envoy, a Cadillac CTS, it goes on

One day my brother asked me to take over his '07 Tundra. It is a double cab and he wanted a regular cab with the 8' box. He even subsidized the lease. I wasn't enthused, but agreed to try it. I soon realized that if BMW made a truck, it would perform like this one. It's tight, powerful, handles more like a sports car and is Mercedes Benz quiet. It's also one of the better looking trucks in my opinion and these thing combined likely contribute to it's highest resale value.

Dad has an 09 or 08. 5.7 I Force double cab. Drives funny to me, steering way overboosted, brakes spongy, gas very touchy on tip in, hard to feather if needed to pull something. Just didn't feel solid or handle well, I felt much more stable in the 01 GMC or 11 Chev. He had a lot of stupid little problems with it, some the fault of the build and others that just happened. (We're going to trade it because of some mouse-chewed wiring on the front to rear harness. I spliced 22 wires to save the approx $950 list price for that harness new, and sooner or later that will fail, certainly not the fault of the build.)

I wasn't impressed enough with the truck to warrant a change to it. He won't go for another.

i second this. My father has a single cab long box 4.7l. And it has power to spare. Has pulled many heavy loads with it and not had any issues. If he was going to be towing at capacity regularly, he would of gone for the 5.7l though.

Empty he gets over 25 mpg.

I could never understand the "COOL AID" comment. How could someone think your drinking the "cool aid" because you have purchased a vehicle that pretty much gives trouble free service?

Whenever I've heard that comment, I always thought there might have been a little jeolousy.

Nah, I just think it kinda funny that there are those out there that extol the almighty Toyota brand, even though they put out ugly, boring junk just like everybody has at one point or another. In my experience, the Toyotas have not been any better than GM, Ford, or Chrysler. I have had three acquaintances have Tacoma frame failures, my mother in laws 2009 Avalon is a shoddily assembled, extremely boring car, and one of my customers 2011 Corolla has had brake and water pump issues at only 30k miles. My GM and Chrysler produced daily drivers have been superb. I have no reason to switch over. Toyota produces absolutely nothing that I gotta have.

We need keep the bad news about Toyota and Honda secret. There are so many right now trying very hard to convince themselves to buy a Japanese vehicle.

lets look at recalls another way. Honda and Toyota recalled their vehicles because they did not live up to thier standards and what they want from their cars or trucks.
GM does not care they charge the customer.
IMO

^ This is troof! They gave me 150% KBB for a 99 Tacoma back in 2008 with 125k for a pinhole in the frame. Which led me to buy my Tundra off the lot for less than $17,000.

They stand behind their products. (<<<notice the period)

Amen brother....

I had so many issues with my GM vehicles that I actually wrote a letter to GM. I explained that my family had been all GM since my grandfather got home from WWII. I listed all the vehicles that we had purchased from them over the years and even included pictures of the 71 Chevelle SS I owned at the time. Why? Because at 43,000 miles the trans went in my 97 Tahoe that I bought new. 43,000 frigging miles! My tranny guy told me that it was a known defect and that GM was ignoring it. I basically got a form letter back from GM and if you read through all the mumbo jumbo it really said tough $#@!.

And don't even get me started with my wife's crappy 98 Gran Prix GTP.That car had been in the shop no less than 7-8 times before it hit 30K miles. What a frigging turd. We traded the Gran Prix in on a Honda CR-V, that Honda now has 99,000 miles on it and we've done NOTHING to it. So if it's Kool Aid I'm drinking....it tastes pretty damn good.

I made a couple bucks painting a tailgate for a friend of mine. He drove a riding lawnmower on some ramps into the back and the tailgate buckled in the upper corner. Did a little reading and found out they are somewhat on the weak side but otherwise he loves the truck.

I feel the same way. And no one manufacturer makes everything good, while another does everything "bad". Sometimes the difference between a lemon and a trouble free car can be as simple as what engine/transmission you choose. Unfortunantly, I am done buying "new" anyways. Everyone's getting ready to go off the deep end (or already have) with the turbocharged/direct injection/small dispalcement/ countinuosly variable (lawnmower) style transmission, with heated seats and 99 cup holders, as well as an electronic touch screen to control everything. No one has ever had any problem with cell phones and other "touch pad" devices LOL.

Have an update... change of subject....lol

Have driven few and have two in mind. 08 double cabe trd sr5, and 07 crew max trd sr5, not sure if extra room is worth loosing a foot in the bed...

love everthing so far i have felt in the trucks except,.. As mentioned very touchy throttle and very small and dark fuel gauge pod.

I chose not to buy the crew max because of the short bed. I guess it depends on what you need the truck for. I wish now that I had bought the 8 ft bed but I wanted the TRD package.

If it's going to be a tow vehicle and you don't need the longer bed the crew max is fine.
