quote "If it were joe blow having all these issues, I highly doubt most of you would defend so blindly."
ummm..... have you EVER been to the world wheelstanding contest @ Byron????? quote " I just hope that, because of who Arnie is, he is not getting a free pass from the tracks he performs at in regards to his physical and licensing requirements." I can't believe that any track anywhere that has insurance would take a chance of losing EVERYTHING if they gave anyone a free pass just because of who they are... they would be in court before the injured person made it to the hospital.... quote "Write it off to "Chit Happens" and leave the man alone. Even in his 80s he can outdrive 98% of the people on this board." absolutely correct tom!! here is a funny true story..... after a race in Kansas, (at about midnight, since we were always the last ones to leave the race track) we were on the way back to the hotel, it was on a frontage road off of some 3 lane highway in the middle of no where, Arnie passed the street we were supposed to turn on to by about a half a mile... he says "oh, there goes our hotel... looks like we were supposed to get off back there" so he stopped the truck right in the middle of the road, throws it in reverse, and proceeds to back the truck and 48' trailer up @ about 30 mph for the half mile to get back to the exit.. if you ever meet Rich Janotta, ask him about that... it was the 1st time he traveled with us, and he turned white as a ghost.... very funny..... |

we are all entitled to our opinions, if you don't like mine that is ok with me and if i don't like yours that should be ok with you just the same. i think we all like and admire Arnie and i have as much respect for him and what he has done as anybody but there does come a time for EVERYBODY when you can no longer do the things you have done your entire life and it seems to some of us that time is getting near for Arnie and i hope he doesnt hurt himself or somebody else before he and those around him realize that. somebody mentioned that if you made him get out of the car that would kill him, how do you think he would feel if he hurt or killed sonebody because he was to stubborn to quit when he should have ? i would think that would bother him or any of us if we hurt or killed somebody more than having to give up something we love because we just can't do it safely any more. i also realize that its a risk we all take when we go to the track but in my opinion there is a difference in taking a risk and taking an unnessasary risk and i'm afraid thats the place that Arrnie is getting to. by the way i quit climbing trees years ago.... lol

I personally think that Arnie has lost none of his Driving Skills over the years.
I just think that he makes bad decisions at times (like everyone does) and people key on those bad decisions when they want to say he can't drive anymore. Backing up a trailer at 30 mph for a 1/2 mile mile might be considered a bad decision, (but he got away with it). He has gotten away with a lot of bad decisions over the years. Throw the first stone, anyone, who can say on this board that they never did something stupid. I know I have over the years done stupid stuff that I paid for later in life. Arnie knocking some plastic off his car is not a big deal. The idiot who ran over Larry Davis (with his truck) while Larry was sitting at a light on his motorcycle (waiting to make a turn) was a big deal but the guy got off because he said he fell asleep at the wheel (after working a long midnight shift). Lets keep things in perspective. Tom Vaught

Like I said earlier he came very close to hitting another race car at Milan, when he changed lanes on a burnout.

It happens to alot of younger experienced guys.
Most time when one or both tires get good grip while rpm still high. The more power, the more things like that can go wrong.

Elarson,
I'm not judging Armie, he's been racing a hell of a lot longer then me, I'm just brought up an incident that happened at Milan. He is over 80 and a car with that much power is a handful..........reflexes, reactions all slow down when a person gets older. I have no idea if Arnie is capable of driving or not, I'm just hoping the people that do know him will talk to him if there is a problem. No one needs to get hurt and Arnie doesn't need to go out that way, after all he is Arnie ( the Farmer) Beseick a Racing HERO! GTO George |

@ Gto George..... stand in front of Arnie, and tell him his reflexes are too slow and that he should hang it up....... I am sure you will see just how quick his reactions are (btw I have NEVER seen him miss a shift, and I am sure Eric will confirm just how quickly that happens in a low 7 second lenco car)

At Milan, I was standing at the left rear quarter of the car when he did the burnout. From my really excellent vantage point, I saw the burnout start out normally, then the car makes a sudden, hard move to the left and Arnie reeled it back in without hitting anything. The sudden violent move is typical of a traction problem; not a driver input problem.
FWIW, Eric

I saw the video for the first time today and don't understand how anyone concludes from it that the man has a skills issue. Unless I heard it from his own mouth, I refuse to believe he purposefully or accidentally turned the wheel as abruptly as required to put the car in the wall. Hope it's fixed and we see him at Norwalk for more half track burnouts!

Region warrior,
You really need to read my post better. I have said NOTHING bad or incorrect about Arnie, now there were at least 4 to 5 other members that have said worse about him (don't make me out to be the bad guy). Basically I said if its time it's time ..........only his friends and he would know and YES at 80 his reactions & reflexes are not as good as someone half his age, sorry to disappoint you. Arnie is a GREAT Pontiac icon BUT he is not a God, he is only HUMAN! I have changed my trans brake button position twice in the last few years because of age and I played sports all my life...... It's called getting old, damn I hate that word!! ![]() GTO George |

Many times when doing long exhibition burnouts the back end washes out to one side, especially if the track is less than perfect. When you lift off the throttle, the tire hooks up an shoots you in the direction you are pointed. Eric, Arnie, myself, and many others have had this happen. The Huntsville, AL track used to have a slope to the left lane. More than once it has shot me to the center line when I rolled off the throttle. That's what happened in Arnie's burnout. Can happen to anyone.

Speaking to skill level, over the past 3 years match racing Arnie, he has had consistent reaction times of .440 or better. Probably 25% of the runs .420 or better. He recently put a .407 on us. This is a clutch car, no electronics. I would say his reactions and ability to control the race car still damn good. As far as backing-up very fast, most Arnie followers know that is his signature move. In the Super Chevy days match racing Dyno Don, Arnie was clocked on hand held radar at over 100 mph in reverse. That's the LENCO in third gear backing to the line. It's all part of the match racing show and track personnel, especially at Cordova know the drill well. It is nice that so many here and on other boards are so concerned for Arnie, that shows how much he is loved in the drag racing world. But this little dust-off on the wall is really not much of an issue. Think of it this way, if he was 40 years old, nothing would have been said or worried about. A little body work and back to the races!
