What a strange coincidence, the very same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. But this guy explained to me that all GTOs had 9 emblems "its a well known fact" and that my car was either a clone or the dash had been replaced because it was missing the emblem. I stated that wasnt true because the 68 never had a dash emblem and he told me he had owned a 68 and it did have a dash emblem. Despite me showing him the 242 and explaining that my car was a late year 69 and only early cars got a dash emblem he just looked at me like I was a moron. Wonder if its the same guy that you encountered. Only thing is this happened to me on the East Coast not the West.

I changed the wiring on a friend's 68 Firebird. This car has a BBC with a 6-71 blower with dual carbs, painted black with flames, is tubbed and has chrome wheelie bars on it. After finishing the wiring I asked he owner if I could take it to a local cruise in. After arriving at the cruise in I parked the car, cut off the battery, opened the hood and walked away. I knew the first 2 questions were: How much HP does it have and How fast will it go. I didn't know the answer to either question so I left to look at the other cars. I returned a couple times to check the engine temperature, turn on the battery switch and run the electric fans and waterpump. When we were getting ready to leave just before dark I walked back to the car. There was a man standing there answering everyone's questions about the car like it was his. I asked him about engine and he told me it was a 502 that made 900HP and would run 9s n the 1/4. I nodded in amazement, walked to the back of the car and turned on the battery switch. When I turned around the guy was leaving in a hurry.
I had no idea I had run into a car czar or that they had a name. I just knew they were PITAs and I avoided their expertise at all costs.

Fitting that a Czar would preside over a set-up like that.
I have taken to my car to a lot of car shows in the past and was counting up the dash plaques that I have (all shows didn't give plaques). I have spent a bundle going to shows.
For the last 2 years I have not done it much. Oddly enough, on 95% of these shows, the viewing public isn't charged anything. Not even a dollar.

That's really bizarre! A bulk of my conversation with the guy was about the emblem on the dash too. Is this guy travelling the country harassing GTO owners about their emblem count? Up until last week I've never heard anyone quantify a real GTO by the number of emblems.

This is the part that is incongruous to me.

Yup, seen this happen...at least he wasn't sitting at the wheel, or sitting on the trunk...have witnessed that also.
