Keyword is matched. Do you think any of the hp gain was the result of no adapters?

Better flowing intake.

Back again to real world track testing- if square bore carbs with an adpater are so bad on a factory intake why did my car pick up et and mph over a pretty dialed in Qjet carb?

HarryK, thank you for taking the time to show your unbias dyno results with the parts on hand and even taking the time to explain the limited testing you did to pompous adults that can never understand it. You are a hero in my book, keep it up.

I KIDD not: this last Norwalk, we put a "junkyard dog" Q-jet (dry-sat for 10 months, threw in my trunk for giggles at norwalk) onto a 17.4 ET "69 firebird" with an "aftermarket carb" and ( no other changes) dropped 3 seconds on the ET. Some talk/coach on the excitement took another 0.5 sec off the ET. Therefore 17.4 to high 13s from a carb change. Relevant to the issues in this Thread. The fella took my Q-JET home like a newborn! giggles indeed.

JUNKYARD DOG: a 1973 chevy truck Q-JET where the Top-plate NEVER came off. Accel pump rod on inner hole, installed BE Sec-rods. power-trimmed the Air-damp valve per the loaded 20 MPH pulls in 3rd gear. That proofed as-is for 12.2 ETs on my 68 GTO (the 1050 has since been on with equal ET, +0.5 MPH).

AFTERMARKET carb: some dumb Squarebore <\= 750 cfm, or at best an AFB.

69 FIREBIRD: some clapped-out 69 bird (68?) that they bought curbside on the way to Norwalk, put on the "just in case" trailer, and after a few beers and gutting the interior (in the pits) decided to run it. Fairly rust-free floors i might add.

NEWBORN; well the fella enjoyed the Q-JET a few months, and mailed it back to me.
3.5 seconds dropped in ETs: Time slips by a capable driver with all systems go. No spins, oops or butts.

I've since trew the "j-dog" on a 500" Caddy engine that all of a sudden idles well, and throttles real well ( that (hehehe) had a (heheHAH) a Predator carb).

just a dumb carb that works properly. HIS

Karl, I do understand what a hero is here is a newspaper article on my father, from the Opelousas Daily World where I am actually from.
I was using the hero in this context to encourage HarryK.

HIS -Brad Urban was still alive and at carb shop when my carb was there. Multiple track testings had rejetted slightly for improved times. 455 Builc buddy borrowed it for a dyno test and equalled a Holley 850 DP-so a decent carb. The other "out of the box" was one of those "bad" Demons -which made 695 Hp on my IA.

So I would think both were "decent carbs"-the motor just liked one with an adapter better.

Glad to hear your customer may welcome a revisit: a Q-JET on the (repainted Iron). that data run will get a few thousand views. Hmmmmm, is interesting.

Since we are telling Dyno stories about old carbs under the bench:

Truck PRO STOCK Engine on the dyno (Team was very competitive in the class).

Owner spends $X,XXX for each (two) of the latest and greatest PRO STOCK carbs from a well known carb builder who charged a lot for his stuff in that time frame.

Dyno test was run and engine made XXXX Horsepower.

Owner of team said do we have any other carbs to compare the testing to.

Dyno Owner said I have a pair of old CHUCK GULLEDGE (HOLLEY ENGINEER) carb under the bench. So theyblew the dust off of them and ran them on the engine.

The old Carbs made more hp vs the Brand New EXPENSIVE Hot Chit carbs.

So I believe your story about a Q-Jet that could be 3 seconds faster vs a POS carb with no tuning. I have seen super stock guys with old beat up carbs that they would not sell for any money.

Just Saying.

Technically, makes me think about the textures on the old used carbs: throttle plate edges, venturi erosions, jet erosions, fuel seat erosions, etc.

just maybe some "emulsion flow" & "wet flow" matters of fact are hidden in texture detail.

With all the Q jet talk what would be the best performance model to use? 454 800 cfm model?

What about the Holley DP Q jet performance replacement? Would that be considered a "Matching" test?

Not trying to stir the pot just thinking I should take a stack of intake gaskets, carbs, and intakes to go test...

Would a 1970 factory intake off a GP be a good test intake?

Yes there is a lot of talk about Q-jets but the main debate was just using spreadbore carb on spreadbore intake and squarebore carb on squarebore intake for "optiminum " matching of components or at least not a gross mismatch.
Not sure of which Q-jet is best. I believe the 73-74 SD carbs are up there but not very resonable due to the rarity of them. The 71(?) Buick 800 cfm is also a good choice iirc. And is it the 68-72 intakes that are the better ones?

Yes I understand that, I just like testing things for myself....

Did some research and I know what to look for on the 800 Q jet
I'll just need a little help with jet size and rods.

Not shure what car I want to try it on yet LOL

Winter is driving me crazy !!!!!
