In 1971, designers made subtle styling changes to the Dodge Challenger, providing new treatments to the taillamps and grille. The single-taillamp design from 1970 became two distinct lights for 1971, and a new-for-1971 twin-inlet Challenger grille was painted silver on standard models and black on R/Ts.
Challenger R/T models also received a set of fiberglass quarter-panel louvers. An additional coupe model with fixed quarter windows was added to the lineup.
As in 1970, a wide range of trim levels, exterior colors and striping options made the Dodge Challenger easy for customers to create a special car. However, for 1971, Dodge dropped the T/A (it was no longer racing in Trans-Am), SE models and R/T convertible.
New EPA emission standards led to some powertrain changes; the optional 375 horsepower 440-cubic-inch was eliminated, as was the Six Pack-equipped 340-cubic-inch powerplant. The 383-cubic-inch Magnum engine was detuned to 300 horsepower by lowering the compression ratio for improved emissions. However, a 390 horsepower six-pack 440 V-8 was available, and the 425 horsepower 426-cubic-inch HEMI still topped the vast engine offerings.
A Dodge Challenger paced the Indianapolis 500 race in 1971. Dodge produced 50 Challenger convertible pace car replicas — all painted HEMI Orange with white tops and interiors.

Not meaning to stray off in to a big Mopar tangent here, but here's another thing you will notice about all of the T/A's and AAR Cudas. None came with the antenna on the right fender like the rest of the E bodies. Reason being radio reception was bad and they blamed it on the fiberglass hoods, so they placed them on the rt. quarter.

Goodyear Wingfoots are a late 70's early 80's tire. They have the same tread design as the early Eagle GT's. Very cool tire with that pinstripe whitewall.

Yes, I believe the Goodyear Wingfoots were the predecessor to the Eagle ST's. The ST's were raised white letter, and had an eagle head between the words "Eagle" and "ST". I think those were followed by the GT, then GT+4.

This was Dave Doern's old car, circa 1982, which had a lot of options added that were not on the build sheet. That's our Chicago skyline in the background. This photo was used in dozens of magazines and books when discussing the 1969 Trans Am!

Goodyear Wingfoots were the predecessor to the NCT which evolved into the Eagle GT...

I believe the Eagle ST evolved from the 78-81 OEM Polysteel Radial....very similar tread design....

I replaced the Polysteels on my 80 T/A in 1982 with a set of Wingfoots....

Very COOL and unique sidewall.................AND,they worked really well (the tires).

According to Herb Adams...they were the "best BANG for the buck" in the day.....

back in the 80's I bought a challenger t/a from a guy who was either the service manager or sales manager at the local dealership (cox Chrysler Plymouth dodge) he ordered this t/a with what he said was every conceivable option available and since you couldn't get a/c he had the dealership install it when the car had like 8 or 9 miles on it and he had all the paperwork to prove it. the car was white / black and was very very nice. I wish I had kept it but I traded it for a mint original low mileage Brewster green t/a.

Yes, I think you're right on that! I forgot about the Polysteel tread pattern resembling the Eagle ST's.
