I'd say that accurate and affordable are at opposite ends of the spectrum. A friend gave me a new set of (cheap) SunPro gauges for my break-in stand. The water temp gauge isn't too bad, but the mechanical oil pressure gauge reads 15 pounds low at 60 PSI.
Stewart Warner guarantees its gauges to be within plus or minus 10%. Doesn't sound too bad until you realize that an engine operating at exactly 200° can read anywhere from 180° to 220° with their gauges -- that's a 40 degree spread. I've had the best luck with Auto Meter and have used some of their Auto Gage line with good results.
