I have had a subscription off and on since 86', have kept every issue, have boxes of them. Sad to see them go and feel for the ones out of work, just a sign of the times but not necessarily a good sign.

My heart goes out to all the people loosing their jobs over this. Back in '09 my boss gave me a Good Customer Service Award, the next day she called me in and told me I was surplus and was let go. I was old enough to just retire I feel for these younger people in today's job market. I looked up magazine circulation HPP is at 22,000, Hot Rod over 600,000.
On a personal note my '72 GTO is being featured in the last issue of HPP which should come out next week.

I think they have pretty much sucked for years. I'd glance through one at the grocery store and can't remember the last time one was worth buying. Probably the one that had Butlers Tempest in it. In my opinion they had a newsworthy article last year at Norwalk when Rodney let us pit with them. #1 and 2 quickest all time sharing the same concrete pad. We all thought it was pretty cool. HPP didn't even come over. Granted they probably didn't even know about it but isn't that there job. Walk around and get some news. Norwalk is a gold mine in cool Pontiacs. They could fill a whole year in articles based on that one event. But they'd rather report on LS BS.

At least I got one article in HPP and a side bar article in PE before it shut down.

I've been planning on a full tear down and rebuild on the 68 Road Race Firebird, was planning to document everything and submit it. Guess I'll send it to Grassroots motorsports when the time comes.

Well, it was only a matter of time, but I thought HPP would be around for at least a few more years. The brand has been gone for nearly half a decade now, and interest in Pontiac will continue to wane.

I remember when the original Musclecar Review ceased production years ago. I had been a subscriber since 1984 when it was called Classic Sixties. I believe the remainder of my subscription was transferred to Hot Rod. Luckily Hemmings Muscle Machines stepped in fill the void and is, IMO, by far the best car magazine out there. Collectible Automobile is also excellent.

I was a subscriber to Pontiac Enthusiast when it got folded into that glorified advertising catalog called Amos Auto Enthusiast. If there is any justice, that worthless waste of paper has since folded.

I e-mailed Stephen Kim last night. He was the Assoc. Editor that came to shoot my GTO for PHR, and write the article. He said as a freelancer, he did, and didn't really lose a job. Where he will have a problem is there being fewer publications that he can work for, and will probably force him to drop his fee. He made the comment, that he wished he had gone into the oil business...

I agree with an earlier synopsis of HPP's demise - forums such as this have doomed all but the biggest rags. Several time Source Interlink and others have tried to get us to advertise; the rate/return was poor at best and we declined.

Hope it comes back in some other form.

Looks like a corporate fist fight ended the mags and not because of lack or readership so there is hope.

All our cars are going to be 50 in the next few years!

I use to have a subscription to them, but it kept getting more expensive, so back in college I had to let it run out.

I would like to think that since There has been such a run of this mag that we could compile all that has been written and make two hard cover, every body wants one, Pontiac magazine compilation. One for tech and one for readers rides with backstories. No ads, no bs just a collection of 35 years of tech and rides.

Back in 2009 I had a subscription to a techy magazine (C++ Users Journal), when they killed that magazine, the last issue had a paper on the top explaining the end of the magazine. Three months later they sent me a CD with the complete archive of every issue, in the package they invited me to subscribe to the magazine they moved some of the article segments to (Dr Dobbs). A couple years later they converted that magazine to a digital/online only magazine. All of my techy subscriptions went digital in the past 2-3 years, I'm now observing this happen to my non-techy magazines too. Do not be surprised in 1-2 years if you're forced to read Car Craft or Hot Rod on an iPad or Android tablet.

A CD with the archive of all the past issues of HHP would be an "Acceptable" send off gift in my opinion. I hope that will happen, it would take someone who remains on the staff to think of it as an opportunity to salvage the situation.

I also have a subscription to Popular Hot Rodding but recently let my subscription to "Hot Rod" laps because I thought that magazine lacked in how-to/tech articles and was not targeted to folks who touch tools. I wonder how they will explain merging two or more subscriptions into 1 in the coming weeks.

What's wrong with digital archiving?

Archiving information in digital formats introduces a number of complications.

File Formats
Will current file formats last forever? History says otherwise. If history repeats itself current file formats will not be used in the next 10-15 years.

What problems does that introduce if we archive documents in todays formats? Will we be able to access them in the future? Will we have to convert them all down the line?

Proprietary formats
What's happens if an IT/Software company goes bust or discontinues a product. Will there be a system to upgrade or migrade databases and files?

Storage Media
If the issues with file formats have got you worried what about storage media?

The CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD recordable drives, tape back-up drives etc. Will these media storage formats be around for years to come? With the pace of current development the chances are the answer is no.

Not only that but all digital media has a finite lifespan, meaning even if drives in 10-15 years are capable of reading these media formats with they still be in pristine condition?

Only time will tell if we can solve this increasingly serious problem, as more and more of our data is stored electronically this becomes a more and more pertinent problem.

I'll finish with a link to the BBC Domesday project 1986. A perfect example of the problems with digital archiving. The CAMiLEON project was commissioned recently to try to retrieve the contents of this archive from 1980's laserdisks and BBC Micro formatted files.
