The NASCAR SDs weren't in factory trim when they were raced. Much in the way of "blueprinting" the entire car was performed, as well as aero mods. The discussion was 100% percent stock cars in factory trim, down to the tires, jetting and timing.

Don - those SD Cats were closer to stock compared to what NASCAR is running now .

No, that wasn't the discussion. That was what you brought into it.

Yeah, those "Pure Stock Factory Tire" type cars are nothing like what you could buy from the dealer. Those cars have been tweeked to the ultimate, from the manifolds to the rear suspension. No factory produced model every ran anywhere near as quick as these guys do. They are just like the class racer guys. They push the rules just as far as they can, and still pass tech.

The OP said he wanted to know what the fastest Pontiac was, not quickest but fastest, which indicated top speed as opposed to acceleration. There was no caveat regarding traditional-era or otherwise. Modified cars would make the discussion meaningless. So, we are left with 100% percent stock cars in factory trim, down to the tires, jetting and timing or computer tune. Am I missing something?

the thing i find interesting is that the OP (RossGN) hasn't posted again since starting the thread. from that point forward, it has been a game of speculation on what he meant by 'fastest'. i've found the info in this thread interesting, but i don't think anyone here knows exactly what the OP meant and what he was looking for specifically.

He's says he's owned 3 of the top 3 in the original post, one of his cars in his signature is a 09 GXP G8. He's also a GN owner, so most likely the other car was an 89 turbo T/A. Probably also owned a LS2 GTO. Those are my guesses, seems he likes new muscle cars, as opposed to SD, HO, RA and all the other Stratostreak powered cars that have been thrown out there in the discussion.

I side with Don Keefe, he's most likely talking about showroom bone stock cars with absolutely no modifications whatsoever, just like the were taken off of the car carrier. No Royal prepped 389/421 GTOs, (ringers) etc.

EDIT:

Looking through the OPs posts he's owned a G8 GXP, an 06 GTO, and a 74 455SD T/A. as Paul Harvey would say, "Now you know, the rest of the story, good day".........................

Does anybody even trust the posted time for 60-70's Muscle cars?
I sure don't, some were prepped/tuners, others were slugs so out of tune that barely idle properly much less run at full bore.
Also the driver has a lot to do with the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

But hey ya'll, it's still been an interesting discussion, especially concerning the Musclecars from Pontiac's "Glory Days".

And, it makes you think of what could have been, like forged rod RA4's, high compression, forged rod, 041 cam 455HO's, and high compression 041 cam SD455's.

Sure, consider the posted times and then look at the times a well-tuned stock car is capable of without going into the internals. Some are better and some worse. Look at what Wangers was doing and then look at the posted times for Chevies like the LS6 454. I Ran 13-teens with my '64 Goat 412 (.060 over 400) and was consistently quicker and faster than an LS6/auto owned by a dealers son. I went into the engine and found I had a bad cylinder due to an oil ring that had been folded over and scored the cylinder. I put it back together and ran 12.80's with a 3.55 rear. The Chevy had been torn down and blueprinted and ran closer to mine but still wasn't equal to it

Here's an interesting thread on the LS6 that can give you some idea of the differences between test cars. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/45-c...mile-time.html I don't know if the guy I'm comparing my car to ran headers or not, but you can see that he is very close to the best test times. His car was an auto with slicks. My car ran 109 mph and his, as I recall, was 1 to 1-1/2 mph slower.

Nope. The OP asked what was the fastest, not the quickest. Fastest means top end, not 1/4 mile times...at least to me. For a Pontiac powered Pontiac, it would have to be one of the SD455 Firebirds with a lazy gear. I installed a 2.56 rear gear in my '67 GTO ragtop, which pencils out to 158mph at 5200rpm.....but the car will never go that fast due to aero limitations. It's like a brick. 130-135 and it hits a wall and won't go any faster. I have been a true 145 in a friend's '74 Firebird with a strong 455 and 2.41 gears. And it had more in it. Ran out of room!

Fastest and quickest: '89 Turbo Trans Am if you're talking showroom stock.

"... 0-60 sprint of 4.6 seconds, ¼-mile time clocked in 13.4 at 101mph, and a reported top speed of 162mph"

He asked what the fastest Pontiac was, not the fastest Buick

Yeah, but when Pontiac got ahold of the 3.8, they worked some magic and got significantly more power out of it

Quote:
But that’s not to say that Pontiac was lazy; dropping an LC2/2004R combo into 1,555 white GTAs and called it a day. Nope. What they had did was hire Performance Automotive Services (PAS) to pick white GTAs off of the Pontiac assembly line at random, and install the GN drivetrain- along with a bigger and more efficient intercooler, a new turbo, a stronger bottom end, and since the original LC2 heads wouldn’t clear the cowl of the F-body, Pontiac borrowed a set from its 3800 Series I, which powered the Bonneville at the time.

The original boost level of 12psi from the GN was cranked up to 16.5 as well. The result of these changes actually produced 303hp, but since it was still a no-no to have a car in the GM line-up that produced more horsepower than the Corvette, we were stuck with the conservative advertised numbers instead- which matched those of the Corvette.
