Dash Clock Rebuilding
Hi folks. I have a friend who is wrapping up the last little details with her '64 GTO restoration. She would like to have the dash clock rebuilt before installing it (unknown if it worked previously, as it was one of many pieces in a box).
Does anyone here have a name for people/companies who are able to rebuild the clock? Thanks!

Did they convert it to a quartz (silent) movement or rebuild the original mechanical movement (that you can hear ticking)?

Bought a DIY kit about 24 years ago for a quartz rebuild. It took about 2 hrs if I remember. Don’t need any special skill.
Still running perfectly. Sorry can’t remember where I got it from. |

I did one for a friend on his 67 a few years back. I tried to fix the original, but the material that triggers the clock to rewind (or keep going) was like a lint type material and it was basically wore out. I had that clock apart several times and ultimately couldn't find anyone who could supply the material. I finally put a quartz movement in and it has worked flawlessly since.

Instrument Services sells quartz conversion kits. I installed one on my clock and was tedious but straight forward.

Besides the usual cleaning, lube, etc., this is done: Includes the correct Pontiac power terminal plus we have added a rectifier diode which helps prevent the contacts from arcing which is a major cause of failure in these clocks Last edited by 64-3Deuces; 02-28-2020 at 04:21 PM. |

Had mine converted to quartz by Instrument Services I think for $65.00. I figured the time it would take me to do it made it worth paying them.

Thanks for the info everyone. Sounds like there are options, and frankly, converting to quartz is likely the easier, cheaper, and more reliable choice.

I'd have to dig thru papers to find exactly where I got it. It was not instrument specialties.
