After having to respray a '65 tri-power engine after the new Duplicolor light blue turned out very green, I called around and found out that friends were using the VHT Pontiac light blue engine paint. As far as I can see, the VHT is a perfect match. I've been buying the cans from Amazon.

You likely found the last available PlastiKote 208. It’s too bad Rustoleum sold the PlastiKote division to Duplicolor. I’ve called Duplicolor to ask them to change the DE1610 & DE1515 Pontiac engine paint to match the PlastiKote 206 & 227 Their answer was—“We’ll try.”

Update-

So before I purchased the paint, I spoke with the NPD rep and he confirmed via email the paint was Plastikote 208. It arrived today and it isn’t Plastikote- it’s a Seymour paint mixed to match the 208. The good news is it is a perfect match and should be a good lead for anyone wanting the PK 208. While this worked out Ok, it amazes me the NPD sales rep lied so easily.

Here is a pic of a piece of metal I painted with the Seymore to compare with my valve cover which is the genuine PK 208.

The color looks pretty good in the photo. I guess I would question about Seymour paint? Pigments, durability, fade resistance, oil and gas resistance and so forth. I am not familiar with the Seymour brand. Is it a good quality?

Seymour is good stuff. Been using it for years. It might even be better than the Plastikote. We need to find out if it's heat resistant though... Engine enamel is usually good to 500 degrees..

Dumb bit of trivia: Seymour "invented" spray paint. First to put paint in an aerosol spray can. Very old brand. Looks good.

Maybe you could warm up that pink decal with a hair dryer and see what's underneath on the real label of the can.
And also see if there is any printing on the bottom of the can.

aka - might could bypass NPD and get Seymour color more directly. fwiw.

Those cans like that are a "generic" can of bases to be mixed. It's a line that Seymour sells that I've seen available from several vendors. I have bought several interior colors that way. The selling vendor mixes the color and puts it into the can on an individual can basis.

I inquired on the type of paint used and received this reply:

“I confirmed with our research department, our AP-62208N is formulated as high heat engine paint. Being an engine paint it will be oil and fuel resistant.”

Well for many Plastikote 208 was the go-to “correct” OTC paint and this mix by NPD/Seymour seems to be the same color as the PK 208 (see match in post 44)

I will use the Duplicolor on my 5.3 crate motor and selling 1-1/2 cans of 208.

Well, here's an update. Looks like VHT SP122 (Pontiac 1959-1965) is now discontinued. Bummer. Anyone have some they might be willing to part with?

I just had a local paint store match the 208 from a few quick sprays of what I had left.


Granted it is a more expensive option and not in a spray can but it’s correct and readily available.
I mix it with hardener for touch ups.
