No matter how hot the interior gets with the heater on. it still beats walking.

As I found out trying to get my dirt track cars to run cooler, every little bit of increased coolant capacity helps an engine to cool longer before it hits the critical point. In my quest to keep race cars cool, adding an extra gallon of capacity makes a great deal of difference.

Stupid quesiton; if the temp gauge goes into the danger zone in traffic are you better off to pull over and shut her down to cool off or put on the heat and try to get moving?

Just run the blower fan backwards so the hot air goes outside the car instead of in the cabin. Just kidding, won't work that way but if it did....

In my case if I can get moving my temp goes down pretty fast but if I can't get going I will find a place to pull over and pop the hood or find a side street to get up some speed. Using the heater does help but not enough because it doesn't stop the temp from rising but only slows it down.

It's time to diagnose and fix that situation.

My 455 runs cooler when I block off the Heater Core. About 7*F cooler. I have a hose pinch I use in summer, to stop flow to it. Spring and fall I use for heat. But, the heater core is just a constant bypass. From head, through core and back to water pump. In summer, there is no cooling being done by core. Its just recirculating some hot coolant.

I ended up by passing mine after this ordeal and it’s running cooler now than before it was going through the leaky heater core
