Do you guys really think they changed the knobs on a year by year basis? Plus they made only subtle changes?

Or was it a manufacturer die difference?

The later knobs aren't raised. I got both styles for my 78 ta and an early repops.

I wasn't trying to confuse anyone but showing a shifter knob from a 76. I was hoping the gentleman that just bought his 71 would see it and notice it's not a big difference between the 2 and since later ones are easier to find it would possibly save him a few bucks that's all.

I bought this knob as it matched the one on my 71 TA.
Has a metal raised edge and a fine grain. Matches the interior better too.

@ Judge273 - while close to your original, a 1971 would have this exposed ridge below/around the emblem as shown attached here.


And obviously a pretty noticeable difference than the later completely flat emblem knobs.

The one you show, while still a raised emblem version, is likely the 74-76 era or so I believe....

'75 shift lever/knob that I rescued from the warranty scrap bin in 1975. Been hanging on my shop wall for at least 40 years.

Awesome. Yes that is the second mid 70s design - raised emblem but no recessed ridge around it. Thanks for confirming.

Confirmed with Teri Moody Reed that this style knob (shown here) was original to the 1974 f-body (up to 1976?) as Held for Ransom &
HoovDaddy also shows.

Still a raised emblem - but not with the recession ridge as seen on 1971-1973 knobs.

I didn't realize there were 2 different styles of early shifters this is another shifter I bought. It's a raised and from what I read it's probably an early one but I'm still learning.

You noted "replacement" for your 1974 in your earlier post. So is the photo you posted not the original 1974 knob?

Correct. The original 1974 had the medallion fall off and was reglued on wrong. So, I found a correct replacement. Which happened to match my early '73 knob.

The emblem it appears is likely the same on 1971-1976 ---- it is the knob itself that is different as the emblem on the early knobs exposes the recessed ridge and pretty much fills in the top on 74-76.
