So there weren't 521 "lines"...

Were these line numbers unique for each plant? Brands could share the same lines, right? So would their build sheets also show the same line number or would, for example, 521 reflect a Pontiac built on line 21 and a Chevy might be an 0421 on the same line ??

One thing could be an employee ID of some sort, or the general dept or something to that effect.

In most of my factory jobs one would have to sign off with ID of something, or the dept had to sign off, etc on jobs.

Or a job would have a ID number of some sort, like Keith's build sequence or something. Also a date/time number.

Like said, if more samples it would make it easier to see the associations.

Here's a few pics of the 'Line No.' on a partial build sheet for a 1968 GTO.

I'm not sure how they populate the number, but possibly something like Fremont did? (HFR may know more)

But I'm leaning to the '153' as the Line No. from build sheet. The other 4 digits could be for the cowl tag body #, or at least what they think it might be at time of input in computer?

I don't have many 68 build sheets (at least readable) or no interior tags.

Possibly someone with a 68 fetish may know more.

Yes - they count up independently of any other plant.

Multiple nameplates can go down the same line. Fremont had Buick, Olds and Pontiac. Flint had GMC and Chevy (sometimes on the same truck). When I started at Hamtramck it was Buick Lucerne, Cadillac (including limo) and Volt.

Each nameplate would have its own VIN sequence counting up independent of the other. The general assembly number would count up one for one regardless of anything else.
