Headliner install question
I am thinking about taking on the install of my 67 gto headliner myself and had 1 question to start with (and many more to come). Is it easier/or necessary to install the headliner with the windshield and rear glass out? Irgoatmike

If you never done one before and don't plan on doing another....have a pro install it.

I've heard that the headliner is a particularly aggravating project for the DIYer, thanks for the link. I have a good installer available, but love a challenge. A couple of friends of mine did a 66 gto headliner the other day and I was impressed at the results. I'll take a look at the video and think on it some more. Irgoatmike

I've done the headliner twice in my car. The first time I was 17 and impatient and it came out horrible. I redid it this year and didn't find it to be nearly as grueling as I remembered. I had the back glass and interior out which helped tremendously. The windshield was still installed, but not too difficult to work around.
I bought a few big packs of binder clips and a tube of weatherstrip adhesive and went to town. There's one or two spots that a pro could have probably done better but overall I'm pleased with the job. Like George said, it does require a lot of patience.

It is easier to do the headliner without the glass in, but depending on your car, removal may not be an options. I did one on my 71 LeMans, had the glass out, turned out pretty good, and I didn't even heat/steam it. Only have one small area with a wave, rest is perfect.
I did the one in the clone recently. Dang. First 2 headliners weren't cut right, the 3rd was, but I still couldn't get the rear part right, where the rear glass curves. Just any direction I pulled, it caused wrinkles/waves, no matter what. I finally settled for the least amount of waves/wrinkles, will probably take it somewhere to have the fix it. Haven't heated or steamed that one either. I too say if you've never done one, and you don't plan on doing many, or is the only one you have to do, take it somewhere. Gut the panels and seats, drive it up or call someone, see what kind of a quote you get. I was getting quotes of like $350-$600 to have one done around here. .

Thanks for the input folks, my 67 gto has the front and rear glass out right now, so I was thinking it might be easier to install a headliner. irgoatmike
