This is clip of an advertisment on ebay of a Red 2004 GTO for sale... Hummmm this may stir the pot a little....

"Forget about trying to put down this new breed by comparing its performance to its ancestors ("Back in my day, my stock GTO ran low 13-second quarters on bias-ply tires!" Yeah, right, and when I used to walk to school, it was uphill both ways.in the snow!). Blasting from zero to 60 in just 5.5 seconds and blitzing the quarter-mile in 14 ticks flat means a 2004 GTO will simply embarrass nearly any old Goat you could name."

Now I know the 2004 GTO is pretty fast, but "simply embarrass" seems a little too much for me to swallow. Any thoughts??? (Hey Lance, we're still friends right

Well of course.

Remember to a lot of people now, especially the younger ones old=slow

If it's new it's gotta be a 10 second car, especially with just exhaust.

WOW 11K in Depreciation on a one year old 1200 mile GTO. Does that say something about new the GTO or not. Wake up Clutz!

In 1967, a '66 GTO that sold new for $3600 was worth about $2200-$2600 depending on miles and whether it was a manual or a/t.

That ad was from a dealer. Dealers are morons.

If they're losing their shirts on this car then they got what they deserved...just look at the lousy dealer prep on these cars when they leave the showroom floor. Funny how the tuner crowd likes to bag on the older GTOs yet are so quick to embrace the name.

Where do you get 11K depreciation?

The "buy it now price" was $24,900. Take that away from $33,000 (dealers sticker price in my area) and you are left with $8100.
Also given that when you drive any make of car off the lot it is already beginning to depreciate, I would consider the car to be priced realistically.

Actually most GTO are turning mid to low 13's STOCK.

Top NA ET's - Stock:
1) NVigR8 13.1 @ 106.34 MPH
2) TRU GTO 13.136 @ 105.76 MPH

Excellent posting of ET's, Sal! I will be posting my own in the spring but for now all I can add is that my stock '04 gets from 0-60 in 5 flat. However, that is based on its speedo and I know it could be slightly off either way.

Thanks for the compliment Doug!! I get alot of people saying they love the color, but I wish I new what color it truly is!! I think it's that Corvette blue (I tell people that it's 1966 Barrier Blue because that 's the closest GTO color I can compare it to.) When I get it repainted, I'm going to keep it the same. You ought to see it in the sunlight... WOW!!!

What a lot of these little pre-pubescent pimple faced squids don't realize is in the musclecar era the family grocery getter could also double as an all out race car....without a kings ransom to pay for it. The common working man could afford a car you could race on Saturday, take the family to church on Sunday, and then drive to work on Monday...all in the same car. Thus the term musclecar being applied to sedans such as the GTO, Charger, Chevelle SS, RoadRunner, etc. Vettes were and are considered Sports Cars and aren't really applicable as a comparison. I'd like to see some compact riceburner with a fart can out the back end have as much versatility for the price.

I'm pushing 40, so I'm not really young and not really a really old timer. The new cars are just superior from a performance point of view. They don't have the soul or the nostalgia of the musclecars, which is why the old ones are more expensive (if in great shape).

The new cars CAN be versatile, and be a good grocery getter. Even more so than the old ones. My '01 Formula LS1 was a daily driver with a car seat in the rear. With the supercharger (never tried the nitrous on top) it would run 11.7 all day long, get almost 20 mpg average, and had the reliability no older car can match.

It's just a different era. They each have pro's and con's ... So I just keep some around of both vintage.

My point exactly. Had GM priced the 2004 GTO with that in mind and with a few "soulful" retro cues then it would have fared much better. Ignoring the traditional GTO consumer as Lutz so indicated was both insulting and marketing suicide. Catering towards the younger tuner crowd ( that doesn't have any money to buy one anyways ) , then proclaiming that the real market was the 100k + earner market

( yeah right Bob...I don't know any of my MBZ / BMW / JAG collegues that are salivating to get their hands on a Pontiac ) is pure bullsh*t. C'mon GM, just say what it is and price it accordingly. There's plenty of people who wouldn't mind having a 400hp grocery getter in their stable that's not going to break their bank account.

Ture but how many 66 GTO were sold Verse's the 04. With lower production numbers the 04 car should be holding some value.

Also Thanks OZZY for correcting my math. But From what I seen some dealer's were charging $5-6K over sticker just to order the car at the begining of the model year. Realisticly this 04 could be $12-13K less then when bought new.
